Can you hear a bottom end bearing going?

My girlfriend has an old 1.3 Fiesta with the Endura-E engine in it. Recently it's been giving her problems (which I think are plug / lead related but won't get there until the weekend to check).

However the amateur 'expert' mechanics are already casting their opinion..... one particular friend of the family revved the engine and stated that he could hear that the bottom end bearing was on the way out :conf: Which is surely an absolute load of bo11ocks.

Please put my mind at ease and confirm that this guy is talking out of his arse!

Thanks guys  the situation is, when the car's warm it'll stutter and judder badly like it's about to stall. Sometimes clears up again and drives fine, sometimes carries on until it's switched off and left to cool. Sounds to me like a bad misfire but i won't be able to tell until i get there. Does this sound like a bearing issue? Car's fine on short journies (10-15 mins).

Hate to say it but you will hear a knocking noise if one of the 'ends' are going and unfortunately those engines suffer with bottom ends, but what your mechanic has described will mainly occur when you raise the revs and it will be a quite deep knock.

Mainly those engines need the valve clearances adjusted and that can help and as loopy said depending on age they have coil packs, situated at the back of the engine under the manifold. If you follow the leads to the back of the engine you'll find it.

What age is the festa??
