Barry
Ok, what options do I have on fitting new (uprated) cams.? I know its not quite the same, but when I fitted the Piper 285 to my 5 turbo it made a huge difference in power and torque and generally how the car behaved. I know that cam's work very well on 'forced induction' engines and just want to know what options are out there for the Supra TT (j-spec).? A rough idea on prices too if possible.! Thanks. B. Syed Shah
Not really any point on a Supra unless you have uprated turbos etc. If you must, try something like 256int and 264ex, not sure about prices though
Graham Rudd
I have HKS 256in, 264 ex. It makes a quite a nice difference once the car picks up and gets going.
GavinL
I have been looking into this a bit recently and this is what I have I have gathered for the UK/US spec car . 256 cams = tune for midrange torque, 264 cams = tune for small top end gain/bottom end loss on stock turbo's but really suited to bigger turbos. 272 cams = for really big turbo's. If you want more perfomance and don't want too pay a lot of money you could do a lot worse than to pick up a set of used UK spec cams. Graham Rudd
MONKEYmark, My car does feel a little laggy at the bottom end, but I don't know if I can attribute it soley to the cams. Full spec of my car is: 6 Spd Silver J-Spec (RZ), Blitz ECU, Hybrid Turbos, HKS 'R' spec FMIC, ERL Water injection, Half decatted (was overboosting), HKS EVC (1.25bar), HKS Induction kit, HKS 'Priest' Exhaust, HKS cams 256in, 264ex, TDI uprated fuel pump, Uprated Clutch, Racelogic Traction Control, Front and Rear Strut Braces, Tein Coilover Adjustable Suspension, 18" Blitz Technospeed Z1 wheels, BM short shift kit, Greddy Boost Gauge. My car doesn't fly away from the line, but give it a second and it takes off like a freakin' rocket and keeps going . Doesn't bother me at all, but I can see how some people would prefer instant acceleration. Graham
MONKEYmark
Graham Rudd you got a lot of mods on there i was curious about cams on stock turbos,i am new to tuning so learning as i go. whats the hybrids like against stock turbos for lag.also whats the advantage of the blitz ecu my mate has one on his r33 skyline gtr.is it just plug and play type for the £1,300+ is it a straight out the box and install or is it a exchange for your old ecu i tend to keep all the parts i take off in case anything goes wrong. also what can you take to boost up to on the hybrids,do you have to get bigger injectors trying to find whats a good way to go next i know i could do with fmic and boost controller thanks for any info ps are the hybrids worth the cash or better off getting a t66
Syed Shah
Justin, I was only going by what I have heard, and all i know is that most people do not add cams until the turbos are uprated.

Alex
JUN AUTO CAMS!!! You will want to have a longer duration on the exhaust than the inlet as the exhaust port is more restrictive so it needs to be open for longer. 256i 264e would be a good starter level - the lift of these cams is also important. Jun Cams are all 9.3mm lift 256/264/272 duration, and they do a 272 with 10.8mm of lift (but that requires modified piston heads) HKS run staggered lifts 248 degree duration, 8.5mm LIFT 256 degree duration, 8.95mm LIFT 264 degree duration, 9.25mm LIFT 272 degree duration, 9.35mm LIFT Then there is Crower which has not been tried by anyone in the UK but seem to have a good reputation http://www.crower.com Lag would not be increase UNLESS the fueling wasn't up to the task in that part of the rev range. Hope this helps
Alex
Crower parts.... CAMSHAFT Pair 268/276 with 9.3/9.9mm lift - $806.79 - £566.413 CAM SPROCKET (required for uprated Cams - $152.26 - £106.898 each, 2 required.
MONKEYmark
GavinL sorry about that its the cams i was wanting to know about would it be a good choice then going for hks 256in and 264 ex and hks cam gears what kind of power could you expect on stock turbos and stock injectors i might as well get them done as the cambelt could do with changing thanks for the info prefer to stick with hks just want to find out what my options are before i spend the money (Edited by MONKEYmark at 2:12 am on Mar. 28, 2002)
GavinL
Quote: from Alex Holdroyd on 7:54 pm on Mar. 27, 2002[br] You will want to have a longer duration on the exhaust than the inlet as the exhaust port is more restrictive so it needs to be open for longer. I don't think the exhaust port is such an issue with stock turbos. There is a school of thought that says the stock turbo's are the real restriction at this level, not the exhaust port and until you get into larger turbo's don't bother with anything over a 256 cam. The advice I have received for my car is inlet and exhaust HKS 256 with cam gears with a view towards extracting more torque in the mid range. Unfortunately there seems to be very little hard data around to back up any opinion.
paulrenn
FWIW, I had HKS 272 degree cams on my Celica GT-Four, and highly recommend them. It made a huge difference, especially in the top range, and allowed the rev range to be extended too. You'll need some way to retune the fuel delivery system. I'll definitely be interested in Supra cams in the future. Paul

paulrenn
Downside, they cost about £500 quid or so, then you have to install them! Paul
Barry
I'm not fussed about fitting cam's, on an dohc engine its not that difficult, my 5 is a pushrod engine where the cam actually sits in the block. Thats almost an engine out job just to replace it.

Nic
I fitted i256/e264 HKS cams, no difference at the low end of the rev range, makes quite a difference though at higher revs, over 3K it revs freer and feels as though it has improved the torque of the engine.
