Wireless boosters, anyone tried em

I've a wireless setup at home and it's works really well, except in my sons room.

His link is also flakey and dropping to a crawl.

Are these any good?

My sons room is a floor above and the oppisite of the house.

The DL PC is on the same floor as the router and connects just fine and my PDA works fine in the Bathroom, directly above the Router and also in the bedroom.. two floors above the router.

Many Thanks

Paul.

Although:

a) It won't be 5 times like Pete says

b) It will make it a lot easier for someone to piggyback your network

c) you might get cancer from the evil wireless signals (lol)

d) you're better off assessing why your wireless router doesn't transmit effectively.

Are there any of the below in the way?

cordless phones

microwave

fridge

etc (you get the idea)

It depends on whether the signal is bad because of interference or actually the strength. It won't stop things like cordless phones etc from degrading your connection quality but can boost the range.

I think it's just bad due to the distance and walls in the way. Other devices work fine.

There is a Cordless phone and fridge in the way, but these are also in the way of the DL PC. I think it's just distance through the walls.

Thought about using a powerline adaptor, but being a cheapskate wanted something a little cheaper.

is it adsl and is there a phone point in your sons room

It is ADSL and there is a phone socket in my kids room, but I have my main PC hard wired up to the router, so I can't move it really.

Please see reply to Thorin :D

Also not too sure why that will be better then what I have.

I had a similar problem which went away once I changed channel on the router...

Swapped around the three channels that don't interfere and it's currently on 11, which has been the best for me.

The later wireless routers from Linksys and Netgear have an impressive coverage above and beyond older gear.

What kit are you running? What wireless are you using?

If your running 54Mbps try backing it down to 11Mbps or less, i have had this work a few times.

You could always run a cable up to the bedroom from the router. :)

I had thought of that, but it's a pain.

Under the carpet, around the fire place.

Through the wall into the Hall

Through the wall into a Kitchen Cupboard

Up through the Ceiling and then through the floorboards

etc...

No real easy way to run it.

Could just run it under the doors and up the stairs, but I think the Mrs would be upset. :D

To be honest those Netgear DG834GT's are crap, I'm on my third now and they had the longest thread I've ever seen on the Netgear forum slagging them off.

You could try downloading a firmware upgrade for it to see if that makes any difference, wouldn't have thought it would make a massive difference to be honest though.

I was surprised how good those powerline adaptors are - very low latency and they're loads better than any wireless connection I've ever used!

What about trying to pick up a cheap wireless bridge as they've usually got much better antennas than any wireless cards?
