Tom Tom are very good for the UK coverage and are reasonably priced too.

I bought a Garmin 660 for Europe cover and for the larger screen and extras. More expensive at just over £300 but a really first class product.

I went the PDA + GPS unit, and used some well established internet sites to obtain appropriate soft wear down loads. I prefer this option as it can be swapped frm car to car, or bike. f you like mountain biking or hill walking, it is great for getting locatins and determining your position. The PDa doubles up as ( too many to list)

I went for the TomTom One, absolutely awesome...

Having recently moved here from South Africa, the TomTom has given us such confidence to just go out for a drive... It gave us such confidence, that we tried a driving holiday to Europe, flew to Nice, picked up the hire car drove into the city centre. From there drove to Monaco (slight issue with roads be really close/on top of each other), to Florance, Pisa and back to Nice. Also went off the beaten path to some monstraries and other sights, and no major issues... Had some issues with us not actually being able to see the sign for the hotel... ;)

Highly recommended. And had one issue with the unit itself, SD card would not insert, sent it back, and got a brand new, no questions or problems.

I doubt you'd be disappointed with any of the offerings from Garmin or TomTom, the Halfords one is £20 more expensive than Comet I think, you get a case though, wow! ;)

I also went the PDA + Sat Nav (Tom Tom) route. However, I don't know if I would again. I did it a few years ago (4 maybe?) and I'm a bit annoyed that there is no support for my version of Tom Tom now. No map updates - I have to upgrade Tom Tom (and obviously pay) if I want new maps.

I have PDA + CF GPS unit with TomTom v.5 (couldn;t install v.6 because of old PocketPC system. Also using TomTom 6 Mobile on my Nokia N70 with bluetooth GPS device. Both never failed me, working very good, full postcode and house numbers coverage.
