Awesome film... haven't seen the 'Redux' version though? does it add any more to the plot?

Seem to remember that they add a 20 minutes section where on his travels up river, he sits down to a meal with a French family living in the jungle. They talk about the politics of the war and I think changes the movie from being a "deep" action adventure to a political one... Guess that is why they left the scene out from the original?

Great movie to watch on the big screen TV and LOUD!

Still don't like the slaying of the water buffalo scene though...

"Never get off the boat..."

There's other scenes where they nick Duvalls surfboard and they meet the playboy bunnies in some godforsaken outpost and the girls are all zoned out and Chef and Lance get to shag them. It all kinda ties together more nicely, except the French bit. There's no airstrike at the end though, which I think is a shame.

Watched it yesterday, and my wife said (after the helicopter attack) "is this in Vietnam?"

The greatest film ever IMHO!

photography, sound, atmosfear, directing, acting,... all top notch

Having watched Redux, the original is much better.

The French family and playboy bunnies just seem to far fetched and odd.

Helicopters playing 'The ride of the Valkyries' as they strafe the ground with cannon fire is just the best scene.

There's a great documentary by Eleanor Coppola (Francis wife) about the making of the film, and how it nearly bankrupt him personally, and how he had the helicopters and jets for only a few hours at a time before they were needed for 'action'.... it's easily as good as the film... very candid.. his kids are on location too... Sophia Coppola of 'Lost in Translation' / 'Virgin Suicides' fame..

I have it on VHS... not sure it's on DVD yet? - OK, checked, it isn't..

VHS copy here... £33! I might flea bay it! :D

A friend has always raved about this film and it was on when we got in from the pub on Saturday night. I wateched 20 minutes and it's the biggest load of Yankie tosh and twaddle i have ever witnessed. Utterly dire worthless rubbish, looks like it was directed by a high school theatre company and filmed in sepia. Only the Americans could market such garbage and only someone on drugs could surely rate it as "good" :) No doubt it will have some form of sequel about them in Iraq.

Normally I wouldn't disagree with you Chris, but this time I'm holding my watch up. Yankie Tosh... Only the Americans? ...... How unfortunate.

Apocolypse Now is a classic and a great film. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and opinions are like @$$holes... to each his own... choose whichever you like. I think it comes down to personal choice. For me, it is a great film. Although I own both versions, I prefer the original.

I tried to watch it, as I'm trying to work my way through some 'Old Classics'... Did 1984 and 'The Thing' this weekend (1984 I didn't agree with, got a bit bored and the big bush scared the life out of me! (Is that why they're always asking for razor blades??)), but I didn't enjoy A/N... I love my war films (Full Metal Jacket, Platoon &c), but this one bored me...

how come the americans make loads of films about war is it so that they can acctualy pretend to win one? Ok a bit harsh but very true they have never won one on their own.

It's cos these days, they're the only ones with enough $$$$$ to pay for big productions and big film stars. Can you imagine what kind of war film we would make with Hugh Grant, Kenneth Branagh, Helen Mirren, Rhys Ifans and the other luvvies. :)
