6th Gear will not select....Help!!

Hi Guys,

 

Problem:

 

I have a 6 speed manual TT, being honest i hardly ever use the 6th gear as its always running around town, few days ago i noticed that my 6th gear has 'vanished', theres no crunch, or grind, nothing!!, it just will not select it self no matter how hard i try.

 

Solution:

 

What do i do?, is there some kind of synchro mesh i require? cost?, who supplies what?

 

I need to get this sorted as its driving me mad, any advice will be much apreciated,

Is the stick actually going back to where 6th is, or is the 'slot' just not there?

 

Also, be aware than 6th isn't directly backwards from 5th, it's slightly to the left (see pic)

 

If there is a faul it's more likely to be a problem with the linkage rather than the box itself. I'd get it to someone who knows the unit's well - where abouts are you?

well i've tried engaging from 5th to 6th, tried different methods like you've mentioned but still no joy. Then if i try to find 6th it will engage into 4th!!

In that case it'll almost certainly be a linkage problem. Does it have a short shift kit fitted?

err, well ive driven other 6 speeds seems standard, but i may be wrong.

Get it diagnosed before you go buying parts fella. As mentioned eariler, where abouts in the UK are you? It might help recommend a place that knows the getrag.

Have a check under the gator at the base of the shifter, there's a few other possible causes in old threads (but they are far more expensive) i think its will be something simple tbh

Isn't there some sort of plate at the base of the stick? Has this moved or previously been put on wrong?

Have you tried when standing still with the engine off?

Mine was like this when I first bought the car, on the test drive it was very difficult to engage 6th, Nearly put me off buying it. I used to have to wiggle it into 6th but through daily use it slackened off and is very slick now.

I reckon its the linkage seizing up somewhere especially if you never use 6th.

 

BTW the car will sit quite happily at 30mph in 6th.

it will be there mate, never heard of sixth gear not engagin they are tricky to find (dont rush the shift take your time and dont push to hard to the right to get it)..

 

or you might have bought a sz converted to tt
