Supragal Posted May 26, 2007 Share Posted May 26, 2007 Ok, so at 70-75 I have steering wheel wobble, I can drive through it up to about 90 where it returns. Feels exactly like the wheels are out of balance. Now that didn't make sense as they were done when I got the wheels and they had done... well... 10 miles when I found the wobble. Anyway, thought I'd best get them checked, went to Micheldever (not impressed, disaster city) and got them redone. Still does it. So, what else can it be? If the tracking was out and the wheels were pointing in could that cause it? What about if the hub is out of balance? What would cause that, I mean the cars not been anywhere... Graham S Posted May 26, 2007 Share Posted May 26, 2007 You might have a buckled wheel? Worn suspension can sometimes cause it too, but sounds like its quite bad... Could be the spigot rings on the wheels are either missing or slightly out of shape causing the wheel not to fit on the hub perfectly centred.. Went to my tyre place and my wheels needed major balancing, I now have no wobble at all and thats with a slightly twisted subframe. Its the wheel balancing Im guessing. They are BRAND new, I'm sure they would have said something today if they weren't straight? Suspension I guess could be it, bushes etc, it's been sat for so long. How do I check, it passed it's MOT with flying colours they couldn't find anything wrong with bushes etc WSB2 - It can't take 3 attempts to balance the wheels can it? Surely the odds of 2 places getting it wrong in exactly the same way is a long shot? Thorin - Ok, could be, but I have no other symptoms and it's done it before and now after an MOT. I still get a slight wobble at 130 I had a strange knocking sound from the front and a bouncy ride. The alignment sorted out pretty much all of that. And the guy really knows what he is doing, just say a guy was down recently with a wide grey abflug car and recommended you. I think Rikki is the guys name. More important is that have a drive on flat bed ramp and it can take wideboys, so no clearence issues and its only £50 + VAT for alignment not sure how much they would charge to balance all 4 tyres but he will tell you exactly whats wrong and what he has changed. Not sure mate, but at a guess i'd have thought anywhere that sells alloys should be able to get them, or contact the maker of your wheels and see what they can do. Does anyone know somewhere that will balance the wheels on the car? What else can it be and how do I test? Could it be hubs or discs out of balance? How do I check? Please help me!! Last time I had a balance problem it was being caused by the rears, and not all places think to check them. Great Tyres are brand new, but they wouldn't be covered by warranty I'm sure. Thanks Si I will start making a list... Has anyone reasonably local got a set of stock wheels that are proven good, who would be willing to let me put them on my car and take it up the road, that way I can start eliminating things...? wallace9 Posted June 26, 2007 Share Posted June 26, 2007 I'm having the same problems. Had 4 new tyres fitted and the car started to shudder. Had the wheels (all 4) balanced 3 times, full wheel allignment at toyota garage and they checked for other causes eg wheel bearings, suspension, but could find nothing wrong. I'm going back to the Toyota garage on Sat. and one of the technicians is coming out with me for a drive to see the problem first hand. Out of interest what tyres do you have fitted? Nearly £1500 of rubber. I'll be pi$$ed if they are faulty. I'm 100% convinced its the tyres that are causing mine as it only started after having the new ones fitted but I will let you know if and when i get to the bottom of it. Supragal Posted June 26, 2007 Author Share Posted June 26, 2007 I'm not sure about braking (don't do that much haha) but it gets better if you are on a slight bend, obviously given the speed it occurs at I'm usually on a dualy when I see it so normally straight roads but even wide sweeping bends seem to lessen the wobble. Scooter- if you don't mind that would be brilliant, even if the fronts are out and the speed it happened at moved it would incriminate my wheels/tyres as the issue... Nic - no spacers. Ricky - they have been balanced by different places too now, Micheldever are meant to be really good too.
