Wireless internet speed

I'm getting annoyed with the speed of my internet connection. Opening web pages is fine but downloading anything takes ages. Even attachments from e-mails download at about 30kbps! My computer is getting a bit dated now (which I'm working on upgrading) but it should be decent enough for the net with a P4HT and 1GB of RAM.

I've currently got BT 8Mbps with the line capable of up to 6.5Mbps. I have a BT Home Hub which is pish and won't work wirelessly (sp?!) unless it's sitting right next to the computer. This means I've had to run a 15m DSL extension from a secondary phone socket upstairs. Question is, would my broadband be significantly quicker if I had a decent wireless system connected to the main phone line downstairs beaming it to the computer upstairs?

Where is your filter? At the junction box or the end of your extension?

It's at the junction box, I think that's right?!

As for the wireless, you may try changing the channel of your router.

How do I do that? :stupid: Having searched on here I found the BT Home Hub doesn't get a very good name so would I be better with a Belkin or Netgear etc? It drops it's connection quite frequently too even though it's plugged in with an ethernet cable. I've got 2GB of 800MHz RAM ready to go in when my new motherboard arrives so hopefully that might help a little bit too.

You'll only ever get 54mbps from a wireless router but realisticaly it is only around 27mbps due to it being half duplex - Also get rid of any BT wireless routers, it crashed my mums computer and I had to recover it losing a months worth of data, also someone from work is having similar trouble with their computer and they have a BT wireless router....
