Hazards stopped working - failed MOT. :(

I've checked the HORN-HAZ fuse in the engine - that's fine.

 

Normal indicators are fine.

 

Removed the hazard connector, reconnected.

 

The CJ Supra manual suggests its the loom - but where to start?!

 

I'm sure they did used to work and I've done no rewiring since. Ideas please anyone?

Do you mean the hazard switch itself? How can I check this other than what I've already done by removing and refitting?

 

Maybe I need a known good one.

 

Yup, exactly, loan one and just replace yours to see if it works.. just eliminates another possibility and it is an easy one to check...

Hmmmm. Not sure if this helps or not Pete, but if the Hazard warning switch is disconnected (not sure about just 'playing up') then the indicators don't work either - i.e. when you use the indicator stalk nowt happens.

 

I found this out when I delimited mine and went out for a test run mid-install.

 

If* the same goes for when it's playing-up, then it's not the switch - assuming your indicators are still working. * = That's the bit I don't know however.

Looks like I may have to. I've done a continuity check using an Ohmmeter as per the manual, that comes up ok though.

I took the switch off and tried the indicators just to double check that one out.

Indicators do indeed work fine, as does the horn which shares the same fuse.

 

Bloody great. :(

 

Hopefully someone won't mind taking their dash off on Sat?

Wow, I had this exact thing happen on mine a couple of years back.

I paid an auto electrician to sort it and he came to the conclusion that the hazard part of the loom was at fault either deep in the dash or worse.

What he did was run a new positive from the drivers footwell fuse panel, put an in-line blade fuse holder on and take it up to the switch.

In his and my opinion it was a tidy yet simple way to cure it without stripping half the dash out.

Thanks VERY much for the input. It prompted me to check for a permanent live (which I should've thought about before - DOH!).

 

There isn't one!

 

I guess I'll be doing similar then. There's one right next door to it so I'll do some fudging tomorrow and cross my fingers.

 

That's very odd though, I'm going to study the wiring plans and see if I can figure out where the perm live originates.

At least you've sussed out why now. I know I was shocked when mine went, I hardly ever use hazards and then I tested them days before the MOT.

Must be a weak point somewhere, be interesting to know where it is? Alot easier to run a new live to it with a fuse though, you can always lash something up temporary to get it through the MOT though.

I thought the indicators didn't work at all when the hazard switch was disconnected as it completes the circuit when plugged in, yet yours still work when its un-plugged.?

That's correct, no indicators at all when disconnect.

When you arm your alarm, do all the indicators flash?

Yup.

 

I had a similar problem when my drivers side window stopped working Pete. Turned out the connector block in the foot-well fuse box had become corroded over time. Worth a look (as it took me ages messing about with fuses before I realised)

I don't think it's fuse or fusebox related as it shares a fuse with the horn an that works fine.

 

I'll do the perm live mod tonight.

A bit later tonight, I'll dig out the wiring diagrams for the VVTi and have a look for you Pete, if I don't respond by about 9ish tonight give me a nudge...

Interestingly I can see the White permanent 12v travels through two other connectors on the way to that switch.

IB2 then IF1 - both in the drivers foot well. I can see some upside down shenanigans in the morning. I'll see if they're receiving power.

Pete, my thinking was it needs to be one wire leading to the fuse, but then two afterwards (one power to the horn and one power the indicator switch) - my money is definitely on one of the connector blocks!

Mine too now I know they exist :D

I've got up late, will let you know after eating my sausage and egg sandwich.

 

I bet CW has already got up and built half the perimeter fence with his rented JCB for his mutant shaggy cows by now, whilst I can't even look at a connector. :rolleyes:

I ran a 12v perm to the back of the switch just to test and it works. I'm damned if I can find these junction connections as listed in the manual - but I am looking at pre VVTi data. :(

Maybe what I'm looking for simply isn't there. For instance - the OBDII connector on the drivers under panel isn't connected to anything!? (unlike the diagram)
