Main warning light on throttle lift-off

splurge

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm having a seemingly-obscure problem with my Supe and was wondering if anyone has seen anything similar?

When I lift off the throttle, the general warning light (red exclamation mark) will sometimes come on. Putting my foot down again makes it go out again, or it will usually go out of its own accord after a couple of seconds. Occasionally it will stay on for longer. It seems to happen more when the car is cold, but this could just be subjective on my part.

There are no strange noises, no loss of performance, or anything else that I can associate with the light coming on.

It's a J-spec TT auto with no mods.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Me too me too!

But happpens when i floor it, normally from stand still.

Big red triangle and handbrake light, if i ease of it usually goes off.

Though once it felt like someone had pulled the handbrake as the car seemed to die when light came on and then carried on.

Come on Ian spill the beans...

Thanks very much, Simon. I'll get some tonight and top it up. Any particular recommendations on brake fluid, or are they much of a muchness?

So presumably my brake fluid sensor is nearer the back of the chamber and Nish's is nearer the front, explaining why we have the same problem the opposite way round?

And I guess the fluid expands a bit when it gets warmer, meaning the light comes on more when it's cold?

All makes sense when someone tells you the answer! Cheers again.

The DOT rating of brake fluid relates to the boiling point, so DOT4 has a higher boiling point than DOT3, so will handle more heat being generated by the brakes before it starts to boil and your brakes fade badly. DOT5 (silicon based) should be avoided at all costs, as it is not compatible with the others and is generally shite. DOT5.1 has the same high boiling point as DOT5, but IS compatible with the others, so if you were changing your fluid that's what you should go for. If you're topping up, DOT5.1 would be OK, and so would DOT3 or DOT4 if that's what was in there previously.
