Stonkin
Anyone else having these sad thoughts at the mo? I've been considering it a little while. I love my car to bits, best car i have ever owned, but to be honest its costing me about £600 a month in just loan, insurance and fuel. That doesnt include if any minor issues pop up or service costs. I'm really wanting to get on the property ladder fairly soon and so thinking of selling the Astra and the Supra and buying a cheaper but nice 'normal' car for a while. Each month i go through all my wages and never seem to be able to keep any aside to start building up some savings. Theres also some things i want to be able to do in life, explore the world and get involved in more activities which at the moment are just difficult to do. I guess my grown up head is coming into play in the last 6 months, and for me at the moment, there is more to life than just owning a ridiculously fast car. I could still drive round in a very nice car, but also experience some more of the good things in life and get my financial situation on track. Feels very weird to be having these thoughts and i cant believe i feel strongly enough about it to even be writing this. That in itself is telling me that perhaps the time is right... colsoop
I have the same predicament, house or car. After 5 years of owning the Supra i think it is time for a house. Having bought a runabout and not driven the Supra for a while i know i can adjust to not having it. I say if your thinking of selling then do it, get on the property ladder. although i suspect you may still be using most of your wages but you will have your own place. Whitesupraboy2
yep, im thinking of selling too mate, but the good news is with NA's being so cheap I know I could be in a supra soon again after. And the running costs of an NA to TT I have found massive.
Stonkin
Running costs are very large yes. I'm just about to move depts at work (should have happened on the 1st June, but they are still interviewing to replace me) which will also give me a slight payrise in the process. But i honestly feel there is more to life than just breaking the bank on a supra every month. I can always get another in a few years, a nice 6 speed single, hmmm. But for now i just think i have had my fun. The car is running like a dream and looks beautiful and because i dont 'need' to sell it, i can hold out until i get the price i want. I know its a fantastic car, just a case of finding the right buyer. Did i mention, i just cant afford to finish my tattoo, kiddin!!
KaoriFan
funnily enough, coincidence. i am seriously thinking of doing the same. Love the car to bits, my dream for many years to have a Supra, even going back to the Mk.III days. Had it since Oct 2005, but now definitely think it is on the cards to be going for good soon. At times i need to have better front seat access for the passenger, and the Supra is impractical. my other Car, Carlton went in Jan as it needed new ECU and was too costly. More importantly i need to get some funds soon, as i want to go to Nanning in China for a month or three to stay with my woman, as she is there for a year at Uni
VIL
At some point you need to take the sensible route.... Keep spending money on a car that depreciates (all be it slowly) is not a good use of cash, especially when there are more pressing things to be using your money for! Remember you can always get another car when you are more financially secure....but you wont ever get there if you dont make the sacrifice! Lifes rubbish like that.... Stonkin
Very true Vil, sooner or later something has to give. Dont get me wrong i could keep going like i am perfectly fine, i do ok in life. But, i want more. I've always had 'money pit' cars, and now my sensible side is taking over.
Stonkin
You all gona hate me i know, but i'm considering something like a 525i sport, 530d? Something along those lines. Lot of car for the money http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/171442.htm Like this but wouldnt have an auto, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/167344.htm another one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/164041.htm
turbonut
the 5 series as thirsty as the supe, I believe, but found this - small, economical, and quite unique.... http://www.bubblecar.co.uk/photo.htm
Stonkin
i cant see a 525i or 530d being as thirsty as a 400hp Supe? Need to check some figures, but i imagine it would be nearer 28/30 average. I think i'd rather keep the astra than the bubble car Linda
Bobbeh
Wow, thats a lot of money! I would'nt own one if it was costing me that much. I only drive mine as its pretty much fuel/insurance only these days and now its not my daily driver its not costing me much at all these days. 5 series diesel would be a good choice.. you can even get those mapped to very respectable power/performance levels while still retaining the good MPG, especially the 3 litre ones Although I'd probably go with a Lex. mattanna
running costs are a pain to say the least, but if you go for things like Mercs and bmw's etc and they go wrong(and they certainly do) you will be looking at huge cost too, prob more than the supe:search:
Stonkin
Not good is it Bobbeh. Was sat down recently working things out. £600 is a lot. I love the car to bits though, really do. just need something nice, with still a bit of grunt and some luxury to tied me over. even this could be good, certainly cheap to run http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/164595.htm
Stonkin
I think i've virtually made my mind up
Bobbeh
Why not just get a cheaper ride for daily driving? Or dont you have the space?
Stonkin
I have an astra which i bought off a member on here. Extremely cheap runabout car. I do use it quite a lot, but when i get back in the supe i drive how you would expect, dont thrash it at all, but i do use it. Fuel doesnt last long. But even if i'm not using it much, i'm still paying £270 for the loan and £80 for the insurance and then say £150 for fuel with using it at w'ends, still £500. and thats still not factoring in maintenance. And thats £500 with it sat on my drive all week. To be honest as well we have 1 car parking space at my flat with bro. I have the Astra, Supra, he has a Fiat, a Porsche and a Ducati. So we already take the piss
Bobbeh
Doh At the end of the day I wouldnt assume getting a car like the Lex or a new Bimmer would reduce maintenance costs.. I think BWM charge around £110-120 an hour at their garages (if you were to get them serviced there) and parts are even more expensive than Jap cars... plus would you still have loan payments on another car? or would you hope the Supra sale money would cover the costs. Stonkin
I would have to take a loan for about 3k to buy a 6.5-7k car, ruffly. And i wouldnt dream of using bmw for work!!! There is a company called Young and Pollock in Maidenhead, a very good bmw specialist that i used for my E30 325i. £35 - £40 per hour, same as the likes of Phoneix. Parts from german and swedish are also good prices. I dont know, as i said to Linda earlier. This is my second day of giving up smoking again, perhaps i'm losign the plot. But realisticly these figures just arent adding up each month
Stonkin
its a 998 Linda but a limited edition matrix 2, absolutely beautiful. Totally standard but with a Terminogi Carbon exhaust, sounds out of this world http://www.fyldesuperbikes.co.uk/ducati_998_matrix.shtml
Bobbeh
Ah, stop the smoking first then consult the car costs later
Stonkin
maybe mate. But think of this, my car costs me £150 a month more than where i live, and thats a 3year old lovely flat in a nice area that i share with brother.

MrHanky
Just get yourself a cheap runaround (or keep the astra) and get yourself on the property ladder. In a few years you will probably be in a position to buy another fast car etc. Remortgage's are great for that sort of thing I must admit I keep thinking about how better off I would be financially if I didn't have the Supra. But at the end of the day you only live once and I have plenty of time to be sensible in later years
