The main solo part in Steve Vai's - For the love of god, still fills me with awe. Been listening to Antonio Forcione recently he was another one I'd never gotten around to listening to until not so long ago. I would give the song 'endless sacrifice' a listen, i'm sure you will like that. Nice ballady part to begin, then very progressive in the middle and two unbelievable solos, in one of which he ascends through a series of notes faster than anything ive heard! I went to see Tommy Emmanuel and Clive Carroll recently and they were just awe-inspiring. Brilliant acoustic guitar but accessible to anyone. I really like Vai and I think he's way ahead of most rock based players. However, harmonically, rock is a bit vanilla and I can't listen to it for long periods of time any more. I also like Paul Gilbert -surprisingly versatile player. Frank Gambale ticks all the boxes for me: (a) harmonically challenging and interesting (b) monster technique © monsrter feel (d) unbelievably fast (e) makes a bloody racket Quick burst: Edit to add some more, guaranteed to give non-fusion fans a headache. Vai - Yeah I'm a huge fan of both him and Satriani. I think some of Vai's later stuff isn't as good personally. Yes he plays some incredibly technical complicated stuff that's truly awe inspiring, but to me I prefer Satch's more bluesy tone and when he gets going he's just as competent if not more so (as you would hope being Vai's teacher ) Frank Gambale - Heard of him too... although again not heard any of his stuff.
