Steve W
Don't POOH-POOH this, but, Is anybody running the early jap' 16" wheel sizes.?? Mine is, and DESPITE not being the most fashionable, I like the ride NO stiffer than it is already thank you. Anybody know about types/prices/WHERE of 225/50-16 & 245/50-16 ? [ ps. the ONLY reason I would want 17"/18" is IF I want to upgrade the brakes at any time - the 'likkle' brakes are just fine at the moment but I CAN understand wanting more retardation at some 'stage' (pun) ] [ pps. I CAN take the 'grandad' & 'wussy' quips, so please, feel free ! Phil Irwin
Take a look at Mytyres.com (I think) there is normally a link through the Autotrader site. They were doing 225/50/16 Avon Z1 at £81 incl delivered.
Alex
Avon ZZ1's are terrible. Avon even admit it! Hence the ZZ3 has just been launched! Falken 451's seem to be good VFM.
Rich J
Bridgestone SO2 Pole Positions, probebly the best tyre on a Standard 16" wheels, masses of grip but they wear out quickly if you spin them a lot.
Adam W
Goodyear Eagle F1's - excellent grip wet or dry and much more wear than the S0-2's. Also brilliant ride and minimal road noise compared to other brands I've tried.

Steve W
PHIL... Just went to 'MyTyres'. Loads of choice of fronts [225/50-16]>> ZZ1, SPsport2000, SPsport8000, SportContact, S-02, S-03, Pilot, EagleF1, P6000, P7000, and ~6 lesser/budgets. BUT for rears [245/50-16]>> ZZ1............... They don't list any of the others in that profile ?? Is it a strange/non-european size ?? CAN you use any other close profile i.e. 245/55-16 (P6000, Pilot) ?? OR are they just not listing them for some reason ??
Adam W
I believe it is quite an unusual size. Rather than changing the aspect ratio (the effective height of the tyre) go fo a slightly wider tyre, something like a 255/45, as you will get more rubber on the road, but maintain the same rolling radius so your acceleration and speedo accuracy are unaffected. Alex
that 50/55 no. is an aspect ratio if you change the ratio without changing the width of the tire you'll make the rolling radius larger or smaller. Try a 255/45/ZR16 (measure the diameter of your current wheel and make sure that the tire you pick is a similar diameter. Hope that helps. Steve W
YES, I know about the r******g diameter... ROLLING (whoops) BUT guess what they list in a 255/45-16 ? ? NADDA ! It looks like ZZ1's or nothing..... What about tyre importers (Japanese ?) (Edited by Steve W at 9:35 pm on Mar. 29, 2002)
Alex
There are other tyre disties micheldever - search for them on the site and you'll find a link/telephone no. ZZ1's are not worth buying....Brian Duff currently has some and is quite desperate to replace them!!
Steve W
Just tried 'Tyres Online' site, They list even more fronts (225/50-16); Falken, Cooper, Goodrich, Semperit etc. and a couple of rears (245/50-16); ZZ1's , and, Coopers, Dunlop SPsport8000, GoodyearF1(L & R). Still not a lot of rear choice but I've just breathed a sigh.....
Adam W
Out of that list I would definitely go for the F1's, you'll love em.
Branners
I concur, Avon ZZ1s are the worst tyres I have ever come across, wet, dry, hot, cold, they are just terrible. JB
Steve W
I think I'm sensing some sort of underlying ill-will towards one of the tyres mentioned... or perhaps I'm wrong . . ? ? I certainly like the LOOK of the F1's - all that Assymetric/Directional/Left-Right stuff looks really technical; just the thing to impress people with (if you can get them to lay on the floor and 'bog' underneath !) Are the F1's the "quiet" ones as well ? Already noticed 'Soopy' suffers a bit on some surfaces (not terrible though). It's got some import tyres on it at the moment I think - Bridgestone 'Terranza's' or something (TOO dark I'll check tomorrow)
Phil Irwin
Mytyres look to be the cheapest. They appear to be a german outfit - maybe the odd sizes aren't popular in Deutschland. Contact them, ask for a price and then check with your local to make sure you are saving the money!
Adam W
I had real POS tyres on my supra when I bought it, and noticed an immediate improvement in the ride quality (ie less bumpy) and road noise when I got F1's on there. I'm sure that any good quality tyre would have improved things, but it was just so dramatic it was like driving a different car (honestly!). And it cornered rather better! Plus they look sexy, they are brilliant in the wet (better than the Bridgestone S0's I believe), really good in the dry, and they are pretty hard wearing for a "high-performance" tyre. I recently changed to Kumho Ecsta Supras all round after a wheel swap, and they are pretty good, but noisier, and noticeably less grippy (though far from dangerous). When the time comes to change them, I will be going for . . . well, you guessed it, I see no reason to use anything different to . . . F1's!!!! HedgehogSandwich adi
Nooooooo never buy ZZ1's theyre dangerous. Simple as that. 225/45x16 is a difficult tyre to find. you can get Firehawk FZ40 or FZ50, very good tyre . I fitted Kumho Ecsta 712 supras on my last set, very good ,price around £100 each. Falken FK451 as already mentioned very good also. adi Ps did i mention to stay away from the ZZ1's !!!!!!!!!!!!
Steve W
Useless Information #43286: At present (as received): Fronts = Bridgestone Turanza ?? Rears = Goodyear Eagle ZR50 ?? Old tyre models, or, Jap' spec ??

Guest Mycroft
If you can wait the New Generation F1 arrives very soon, it is the GS-D3 it is by all accounts superior to anything out there now, SO3 included, have ordered a pair for the front of my car (235/45×17). Has that sexy tread pattern too, but less fussy this time 'round.
Adam W
That sounds interesting Mycroft - how can we all be sure we are getting new stock (when they arrive - how long is soon?) rather than the dregs from Kwik-fits warehouse? IE If I go and ask for a GS-D3 will a tyre outlet know what I am talking about?
Guest Mycroft
Mid April, last I heard but will check on Monday. They will still be called F1 but will have D3 conspicuously shown. My local guy will get them quicker than most as he seems to sell more big tyres to the local populace than any other nearby. 'We' all seem to use him, and he buys in serious numbers. Steve W
Probably my last question on the subject: [everybody breaths a sigh ?] Has anybody got Pressures for 16" tyres on soop ? I haven't got a handbook YET, and even when I do will it list 16" (Normally Aspirated ?) or not ?
