Supra Servicing

My experience with Toyota garages has been fine so far, but parts are expensive if you buy from them. Just had my car in for its intermediate oil service today and everything went OK. They did charge me 89p for topping up my windscreen washer fluid which was pointless as I do this myself when at home. But on the whole they seem to know what they are doing.

Be sure to ask them before you let them onto your car if they have serviced many Supra's previously. If they say only one or two then take it somewhere else.

Unfortunalty my knowledge of Oxford area is pretty crap so I can't help you there.

I've been trying to find someone for the last few weeks without much joy, Inchcape Toyota in Oxford quoted £450 for a C service (they say they don't adjust for imports) Coxon in Henley also quoted £450 (and they add £20 per hour for imports), Option Motorsport in Oxford quoted £55 perh our - so again likely to be around the £450 mark.

other than that I haven't found anything else and I'm still looking at £900 of servicing !

I paid £147 at my local Toyota garage for a 'B' service on my UK-spec last November, the 'C' service doesn't feature in my Supra handbook. £900 seems very expensive for a Supra service even if it is an import. Ask to speak to the manager of the garage and explain you are being ripped-off. Other than that there must be some sensible garage that will charge sensible prices.

A service usually involves no more than 1 to 1.5 hours work, if they are quoting more than that try and find out why.

Strictly speaking since 1994 there has been no such thing as a "C" service for a MKIV. The service schedule runs AABAAB at 9000 mile intervals. Even so after a lot of research by Tony Jefford (ajefford to you and me) he discovered that even a 1993 car can be safely serviced on the 1994 onwards schedule.

However, the scope of work is very different for almost every service because items like fluids and spark plugs and valve clearances have to be checked and changed at different intervals.

The first "B" and the second "B" are very different prices, but none should be as high as £450.

Always refer to services by the interval in miles (9000, 18000, 27000 etc) rather than ABC etc. It avoids confusion.

I was asking Toyota for Quotes for a 54000 mile service and they kept coming back with your C service will cost ...

part of the extra cost is that there is no written evidence for any servicing after 45000km (although there is a little plaque in the engine bay with 52000km written on it but my japanese isn't good enough to read the rest of it!) so I want to get the timing belt changed as well but what I'm finding from Toyota is very high prices and I haven't really got anywhere with trying to find alternatives that I can get to.

regardless of when Toyota say service it I would recommend that you change the engine oil, oil filter every 3-4K in the summer if you are running her hard (on high boost)

and the air filter at least every other time, check it regularly and clean any old crap off the intercooler as well (leaves and dead animals etc)

Stick with Toyota at the 9K interval if you wish to keep the service book stamped but for God sake change the oil before then at least twice if you do any mods.

It's easy to do and even if you don't have an inspection pit or easy access to the underneath go to a local garage and get them to change the oil. Supply them with the oil filter (Always use Toyota genuine parts here) and OIL (such a Valvoline Syn Power)

Filter is £10, Oil is about £18 and bung them £20 cash in hand for the 1/2 hour it'll take and bobs your uncle.

(I did my own oil change on Sunday including differential and gearbox, tidied my garage whilst I waited for the oil to drain out and hand a nice cuppa all within 2 hours, so the engine oil on it's own is a 1/2 hour job, mostly waiting for the final oil to drip out)

As for a Dealer nr Birmingham????

Well there used to be Nick Whale in Coventry but they claim to have stopped dealing with imports now. Used to be Murley Toyota in Warwick but now they are Nissan (Spit!)

But I think Murley Toyota in Stratford Upon Avon still handle imports.

No idea of cost as I gave up using Toyota for serving a long time ago. (I just use them for my wife RAV4 as it's got a full service history)

You could go to Leon Green in Watford or Chris Wilson in Shropshire (maybe a little to far to go)

For servicing the Jap is no different to the UK spec in my opinion, my cars had all UK servicing parts put back on without problem.

I make the run to oxford almost every weekend so it isnt to far to come to southampton, marshal rolf quoted me £287 for a C service when I was looking into running costs before I got my Supra. Cambelt £185, and they told me imports "might" be a "little" more expensive if they had to order any different parts.

They also said they were one of the Supra dealers, (think that means they were one of the few dealers that sold them originaly.

When I did get my supra I was pointed in the direction of Toyodatech (near southampton) I called them and had a long chat, they seem to do a lot of supras and mine went in for an A service and a cam belt change. I think they charge similar to main dealers but I was lucky as the dealer who was selling paid for the work.

M rolf - 023 80702233

toyodatech - 01489 877125

Hope that helps

certainly looks that way from what I've seen on the web - I believe it's just Toyota showing that they don't know anything about their own cars :)

and I'm sort of reluctant to take my new beauty to a dealer who doesn't actually know what servicing it needs - I'd rather take it to an independant who knows Supras or at least performance cars.

thanks,

I live in a small village (Upton) down near Didcot. Yes it would be good to meet up.

what Supra have you got ?

I have a Bronze 94 import TT GZ with lowered and stiffened suspension - which makes it a bit bumpy on the Oxfordshire roads !
