is it decent?

Depends what you're looking for I guess. Years ago it was a dump - but now it's a really nice place. Decent shopping centre in the town (plus lots of other town centre shops), lots of bars / restaurants. Direct trains to London and Heathrow I think.

I don't live there - but if I was moving (and assuming I didn't decide I wanted to live in the middle of nowhere, which I might) then I think it would be top of my list locally.

well technically the middle of no where isnt bad... so long as I can get to a train station and into london... looking for something more rural, etc

I think Ash (just the other side of Aldershot) has a direct line to London. And that is a bit rural I think.

Not sure about Godalming. I think that might also have direct lines to London, it's pretty rural and only 15 minutes from Guildford.

Personally I'm a big fan of the north / west Essex, having lived there all my life. :) The train link into London Liverpool Street is good (but expensive), and there are some lovely countryside or town locations all over the place.

I live in Witham which has it's up and downsides, but it's 45 mins away from central London and there's some lovely countryside all around it. :)

Bit of a commute, but it'll be cheaper living there than inside the M25.

Bordon is ok. No direct rail links to London yet but it's on it's way apparently. Bus and train gets you to London.

Property is less expensive than surrounding areas (farnham, guildford, woking, hindhead, petersfield etc) but they are redeveloping the town centre... there isn't much of one now but they are putting in a big M&S and apparently bowling alley etc etc. Army will be gone by 2012 too. It's a good area to invest IMHO.

I commuted for over 12 years for over an hour each way. Its bloody hard work and can often feel like you've never actually had time to "be" at home.

:yeahthat: While I used to like working in London, commuting really extends your day.... even if I'm on a short 8 hour shift I spend about 11 hours out of the house. :conf:
