michael
It seems PlusNet have screwed up again, this time it seems they have 'given' some dodgy spam company a big bag of email addresses. From what I can gather, and in my case at least, most of these addresses are ones that only PlusNet would know about, for example I haven't used any of my @plus addresses for anything... ever... yet all of a sudden I have spam on them. I'm not alone: http://portal.plus.net/central/forums/viewtopic.php?t=55876 And the service status: http://portal.plus.net/supportpages.html?a=2&support_action=messages&ispservice_id=email They say they are contacting those who have been affected, I haven't heard anything. Anyone else "suffering" from this? Will be interesting to see what has happened.
SteamAhead
I've been getting spam on my Plusnet email for a good while now, it's been getting worse and worse, really driving me mad. For years I never got 1 spam, now it's at least 20+ a day. I've always been very carefull of the sites I go on, this has now explained why this has happened, cheers Michael. Gonna pop over to there site now and have a read. Cheers again, Jim
Rob
Yeah, me too. Ham and Jam and Spam a lot. My Plusnet address was always clean as a whistle.
RedM
I'm affected too. Not very happy. We couldn't work out why it was happening. Bunch o' canutes.
Heyrick
Thanks for this Michael - I was wondering what was going on. For me it has affected my children's account which is set up as a seperate one and has never had spam before. They know not to give the address out to anyone and don't afaik visit any dodgy sites (and I do check history etc.) The worrying thing is that this spam is far worse than I've ever got through the main account, really hard core. The children aren't happy that I've banned them from checking thir post What does it do to a 10 y.o. girl when they read "**** them as much as they can handle" or "blondes will s*** like crazy"? it included a dodgy link as well (which they didn't click on thank goodness) Don't know where it led. I've now got the hassle of setting up a new address and getting all our computers set up for it. Thanks Plus Net!
SteamAhead
As I've had this for a while, I ended up setting up a new email account through Yahoo Mail for which I then get it to forward through Outlook. Not had 1 spam using this method. I do think this will be the only way out of it, now that our Plus Net email is out there Jim
RedM
They've known of this issue since the 9th of May but won't be posting an official report until the 18th!
Lewis
If any of you would like to give me a lower amount a month, I'll spam you
michael
It doesn't really bother me too much, it just ends up in the spam bin with the rest of the 100's of crap messages I get each day on various accounts, it's more the principal of it. Graham S
sorry to sound like a retard here, but whats plus.net?? I have a yahoo mail account, is it just another provider sort of thing? I seem to get about 20+ junk emails everyday too..
TLicense
I got a load of spam recently on my "junk" e-mail account that I use for more dubious things, but other than that, I've been quite lucky. Touchwood.

I seem to get about 20+ junk emails everyday too.. plus.net is an ISP - clicking the links in the original post might have given you a clue, oddly enough their URL is http://www.plus.net It's not so much a "I'm getting spam" thing, that goes without saying for any email address that's in use, it's more that people are getting spam on addresses that only PlusNet are aware of, accounts that have been setup and never used, no action for years and then all of a sudden spam. It's clear that someone / something in the spam world has had access to information they shouldn't have been able to get, PlusNet have a security hole somewhere. RedM
Plus.net are in Sheffield. Fancy a visit?
michael
As long as my internet connection stays up I'm happy, I do feel sorry for those folks who use their PlusNet email though, it's even more annoying that they are marking the messages as [-SPAM-] and then sending them through, they could just keep them and nobody would have cause to complain
Digsy
Getting it here too on my previously squeaky clean PlusNET account. My girlfriend is getting them on hers too. I'm off to their user forum to see whats going on.
Digsy
Hmmm, They are saying that their webmail server has been attacked and the list obtained from there. Thing is I don't use webmail and neither does Sarah. The most WONDERFUL thing about this is that I'm now getting spam on my hosted domain address which I guard like its my only child. So now even if I tell PN to shove it, I'll get spam forever on that domain no matter where I host it.
Thorin
PlusNet have a security hole somewhere. Maybe. Or maybe they just sold their database to the highest bidder. With all the troubles they've had recently it wouldn't surprise me.
SimonB
Hmmm, They are saying that their webmail server has been attacked and the list obtained from there. Thing is I don't use webmail and neither does Sarah. They've probably got all the account info there whether or not you use it, I don't remember having to register separately for webmail. Looks like they got mine too, I've had loads of crap offering me copies of Photoshop, never had any before as my plusnet address I don't give out publically to avoid just that! RedM
They've had over 50 pages of forum posts about this and still no solution and only a hint of an official statement to come on Friday.
Supragal
hmm I don't even monitor my plusnet email account... I expect it would be interesting to take a look now!
