JustGav
oh dear gav, you silly git - where is your safety gear ? Hope your ok- George Had just about all the safety gear on... apart from welding gloves... go figure... But I've bought a set now...and to be honest I'm still trying to work out whether the helmet helped or hindered... bear in mind all my facial hair loss is due to the flame inside the helmet. At least it sounds like they didn't have to wrap that up in A&E as well! That would not have been a problem. They have loads of thumb splints there. ... for small children Sod the lot of you *grin*.....besides that is what match sticks are for...

JustGav
In summary.... I'm one lucky bastard that I've got VERY little damage... But, I'd like to highlight to people to check for gas leaks no matter what you are doing, and always wear saftey equipment... I don't want to read about someone coming off worse, since I got off with nothing more than a sore hand, which is great considering.. We have finally worked out what happened... There was an old lawn mower diff which had some flammable liquid in it, which gave off a meths like low level flame when the welding slag hit it and that was sufficient to ignite the gas that was lying low. Without the liquid, nothing might have happened, without the gas, if I had started welding 5 minutes later after a cuppa the gas would have disappated... one of those things really. Completely freak accident of a combination of things, the shed is well ventilated with a door across the entire side, however with the wind blowing the way it was it must have pushed the gas into the area where I was working.. SAFETY, SAFETY....

Rob
That really is an unlucky set of circumstances to occur. Just goes to show, no matter how hard you try, something will always catch you out.
