My knees click and creak!

With reference to the post linked below, before I start I'd like to point out that I'm currently wearing a short satin skirt and if I squash my chest up a bit, it looks like I've got man-boobs. I'm also combing back my long blond hair.

Thank you. Now, on to my question. :D

Whenever I squat down, my knees usually give a loud click! I'm 31, but it sounds like I've got knees of a 71 year old!

They've been like it for as long as I can remember (since I was 18 ish). I can tell when they need to "click", although I try to avoid doing it if I can. It feels like something (cartilage?) is out of place, and needs to pop back in place again. Sorry if all this sounds gross.

Should I be doing anything to stop permamenet damage from being done? Cod liver tablets, maybe? Does anyone else suffer from clicky knees?

My knee sounds make people wince. I put it down to running a lot when I was younger (my parents used to take me places and then drive off:blink: ) and then doing BMX racing and BMX freestyle.

I don't really do anything to keep them healthy so I'll be following any suggestions with interest.

Sounds like knee cancer to me. They'll operate and remove yer knee caps and replace them with a universal joint. [GRIN][/GRIN] Nothing to worry about... really. In most cases the clicking noise is a vaccuum void which forms and collapses (cavitation) as the ligaments are stretched. In other cases it's terminal. If you're not in pain, then don't worry. :)

my knees always click too, it's really bad when I go down stairs particulary, although i've always had problems with and had a few ops before now.

I always take Cod liver oil tablets every morning and it's never got worse but then never really got better :)

Phew. I can sleep easy now. Thanks for clearing this up! :D

I did have a similar problem, and they always clicked ever since I can remember. I am 40 now and had them both operated on and cleaned out, they just scrape the joint and clean out the old cartilage. I think most of this was down to tae kwon do, I was sparing one day and one of my legs went from under me, and gave way. This happened several times after that until I had the operation. they are reasonably okay now, I just take more care of them, I take cod liver oil and also glucosamine sulphate, which does seem to help

Mine do the same, I need to twist my leg with it straight for them to click - feels better afterwards!

I heard that clicking joints were just because of carbon dioxide escaping from the joint and if anything it was a good idea to get rid of it, all the crap from schoolteachers about getting arthritis when older is a myth!

Don't forget you're hyper extending the knee joint by squatting which unless your job is a power lifter you're not going to do this very often. Most of these posts are about clicking joints in light general use which is different.

My knees click, creak, hurt now ang again and my left knee swells up aftr 3 consequetive (sp?) games of golf (typical golf weekend).

I put it down to too much football, American football and falling off motorbikes as a young idiot.:)

I prescribe lots of lying around drinking Stella. Works for me!

Send Gaz Eves a PM, he's a fizzio (sp):D

He'll probably tell you it's something terminal though.......;)

H.

It's spelt Physio :p

May sound like a silly question but is it a series of lots of little clicks/creaks or is it more of a clunk. Also do you find it happens when you really bend your knees up towards your chest (ie in a squat to the floor)

If that happens and its more of a clunk rather than a click/creak then it sounds like you have a small flap in your cartilage. You can have it operated on to remove or repair it but tbh unless it is really affecting your everyday life and you are in a lot of pain, i wouldnt bother. Removing cartilage can lead to an early onset of arthritis, plus the operation (despite how minor it is) comes with risks and they dont always work. Ive seen a lot of people who feel there knee is worse following the op. Having said that though i see a lot who are loads better. My opinion is dont have it unless you really need to. Ive got a flap in my left cartilage but it doesnt bother me to much.

If its more of creak and sound to be coming from under your knee cap then thats an early sign of Arthritis (the noise is called Crepitus) and is just the joint surfaces arent as smooth as they used to be and they are rubbing on each other.

In either case the best thing to do is build up your Quads and Hamstring muscles. The stronger those muscles are, the less pressure on the joint and the less you'll have problems.

Hope that helps.

Try to keep your knees in natural alignment i.e. in a direct line with your hip joints, ankle joints and centre line of the foot.

When doing stuff like golf, squash, football etc. there is a lot of (unwanted) rotation around the knee joint and even some lateral/medial flexion - all of which destabilises the knee joint!!

Things like cycling can improve the damage by strengthening the ligament capsule surrounding the knee - if done with the correct alignment!!

Other movements to avoid are any which place your knees 'outside' your hips and ankles (think of cycling with your knees sticking out to the sides!!), sitting cross-legged, walking with your toes pointing outwards (instead of straight ahead), standing 'hip-shot' (all your weight on one foot and hip to one side) and sitting with your feet up and the back of the knees unsupported - all of these activities can produce unwanted stress and strain on the knee joint.

If you imagine your leg to be like two bits of wood with a metal hinge in the middle that only operates in one 'line', then consider the effects on this hinge if you continually twist it, unevenly load it etc. over a period of time - you will get uneven wear!!

The clicking that you can hear is most likely slightly loose tendons and ligaments snapping back into place as you apply pressure to them - the real worry is when your knees ache in cold weather and if you kneel down and slowly rock backwards and forwards they creak like old floor boards!! :) :)

I have had bad knees for a long time, and in the last few years its got worse and very painful, had them X rayed scanned and told its wear and tear:rolleyes:

anyway recently i thought i would try s change in my diet, and one of the things i have stopped is milk due to digestive problems, and guess what practically pain free:) so i am now thinking that i have developed a milk/lactose intolerance, surprising but true.

my knees often click and sometimes if i kneel down they can click and make quite a loud crunch.. my dad says his always clicked when he was younger and nothing hurts so i've not ever worried about it.

I do weight lifting sometimes and found after a few heavy sessions my joints might ache. A cod liver oil capsule each day helped cure that.

I got kicked in the left knee by a kid with an aluminium lower leg (thalidomide) when I was 14. I remember the doctors quoting sinovial (sp?) fluid / inlamation when I went in with my knee having swelled alarmingly and totally locked up. It was bound up with elastoplast tape for weeks. It gave me grief for years afterwards, and still swells up if I play five-a-side or tennis.

The only joints I have that click are my wrists. Wanking kind of sounds like a Geiger Counter.

I was told to stop playing football so regularly due to the state of my knees.

I've been in situations where they click so hard it actually hurts - and the knee has even locked up before, with me having to thump it back into line..... :S

I was told by a physio that I needed some form of keyhole surgery to look at the cartlidges and fluid that was present. He said it was easy enough to do, but there was a long waiting list :(

They're nowhere near as bad now - if I do a lot of exercise/sport they start to play up a bit, but I can live with it.

That's good to know. My knees click whenever I squat down too, but not during normal light use. Most people assumes it's really painful when they hear "crack crack creeeeeeak click crack crack". I am only 24 though, with a family history of useless knees.
