DaveK
You would have to have been living on the moon to not know about the little girl being taken in Portugal. This afternoon, while cleaning my car there are two little girls cycling up and down the road together unsupervised. I would guess they are around 5 years old. The road is not that long - but they are easily getting 100 yards or so away from wherever they live so they are definitely out of sight. Apart from the utter stupidity of letting your 5 year old kids cycle down the middle of the road on their own, and letting them think that roads are a good place to play - if anybody was so inclined I guarantee they could have one of the girls in the back of a car in no time. The thought of what paedophiles do to kids makes me sick. But I have to say - people don't exactly seem to make it hard for them to carry on. Rant over. grahamc
not the brightest... they should introduce licenses for people wanting to have kids. Things like that, should result in the license being revoked!!!!
DaveK
I'm sorely tempted to go and speak to the parents actually. Even aside from what could happen worst case, it's quite possible somebody is going to turn into the road and hit their kids anyway. But I suspect it would cause a big argument and I don't really want a war with my neighbours.
kieren1234
Your right there mate, im not a parent myself but i can safely say my kid wont ever be out of my sight because a couple of seconds is all it takes.

It's nice to see that you care though. If you went and asked the parents where their kids were at that moment, I bet they couldn't tell you. Al Massey
so your kids are gona be locked in the house all day every day? or youll be outside when there playing? realistically its impossible, you cant always keep an eye on them... and really we should live in a world where we can leave our kids to play in the street/playground and think nothing of it

Letting your kids play in your garden unsupervised is one thing. Letting them cycle down a public road on their own is something completely different. Even ignoring the slim chance that they could be taken - how sensible is it to let two 5 year olds cycle down the middle of the road on their own? Are you familiar with the number of children killed on roads each year?

Rob
I wouldn't mind betting that the amount of "kid-napping" and paedo related crimes is pretty much the same as its always been, but these days kids never go anywhere unsupervised. The couple opposite me seem to embark on a massive operation just to take their two little daughters out on their bikes, it's all helmets and shin pads and checking each other, and constant words of re-assurance and then they cycle off and are back in ten minutes. It's all getting ridiculous, I used to go off all day when I was 6 or 7 and nothing ever happened to me. (maybe i was an ugly kid). It's a sad state of affairs we've got into, and I don't blame the criminals, I blame the paranoid parents.
Al Massey
We should, but we don't sadly. well maybe its about time we took drastic measures to sort this problem,i dont have kids yet but when i do,if any one ever tried to hurt them i would kill em and happily do time, its a sick world we live in and it def needs sorting out
boombastictiger
Thats so neglegant iv been thinking to become a police officer one day JUST to catch paedophiles and shame, name, blame and torture them...I got 3 nephews all under 5, my sister never lets them go anywhere by themselves, its to risky with the type of peolpe around these days, like u say it only takes a few seconds.. It's a sad state of affairs we've got into, and I don't blame the criminals, I blame the paranoid parents. When I was a kid there were about 10 of us in a mile radius of about the same age and we were out all day playing, not necessarily together but several of us. I would go racing around on my bike/scooter/skates/hyperactive feet for ages just going back for meals and drinks. But there was a 'mantra' my parents dinned into both my head and my brothers- NEVER accept sweets or lifts of strangers, NEVER even speak to strangers - if anyone tries to touch you or talk to you RUN to the nearest house (we knew most people up our street then) do parents tell their kids these things any more??? Rob
I don't think they do anymore. If a kid gets run over it'll be the drivers fault, and no-one speaks to their neighbours anymore so telling your kid to run to a neighbour is a no-no anyway. Certain posts in this thread are starting to go all paedo-witchhunt, time to call in Chris Morris to spread some sense.

turbonut
i think there is the danger that kids are so molly coddled that their parents are, sadly, not allowing them to develop their instinct for danger and common sense
DaveK
i think there is the danger that kids are so molly coddled that their parents are, sadly, not allowing them to develop their instinct for danger and common sense I think it's a delicate balance. You generally learn because somebody teaches you, or through your own experiences / mistakes. I guess if I go outside, drive around the block and run them over, they'll learn that riding bicycles in the middle of the road is stupid and won't do it again. Or they won't learn anything, but still won't be able to do it again.
Al Massey
well saying that, the school system aint as harsh as it used to be and so they learn no discipline or self control. kids these days think everything is a joke and a game and their parents need to be more strict with them
boombastictiger
That's what I mean, what type of people "these days"? People like Myra Hindley? These days theres so much freedom in the law to potential peodophiles, they get protection by the shit law and they dont have as much to fear from people as the law generally protects them...also with the type of programs you see on tv, and content people have access to on the internet, it makes it easier for potential peodos to get access to stuff, i mean u walk around town, you see little girls dressed up like teenage sluts in short skirts, i mean wtf how can thier parents let them dress like that and walk out in public....if it were up to me, any proven peodophile would be killed...the world is a better place without them

Sad but shockingly true but then they want to dress like their pop idols and clothing manufacturers have no scruples and see an easy way of making money. It interests me how many of the people who have posted in this thread actually have kids?? I was allowed to roam as a kid and although it never did me any harm, I bet my parents would be horrified if they knew some of the stupid things I did as a kid. Playing on school roofs, setting fire to things, playing on railway lines and telling the park keeper to f@ck off!! I agree with the comment that paedo's are probably as common now as they were 25 years ago, but I have 2 kids and another on the way and I will not be taking any risks with any of them until they are strong enough to defend themselves! Generally I think youngsters do have a lack of respect and consideration for others but I don't think it is miles away from kids of my generation. My kids are both disciplined at home and I think i am fairly strict but I worry about the company they will keep with kids who are allowed to get away with murder!! Either way, I wouldn't let my 5 year old cycle round our estate on his own..... H.
MrRalphMan
I've got kids and it worries me when the oldest is out. He's now ten and has a pretty well screwed on head, but still you never know. This reminds me of the parents of the young kids we hear of drowned in the sea.. Their response is always the same. I only looked away for a few seconds... Bollox you were bloody sun bathing and didn't have a clue what they were doing.. Last time we were on a beach my oldest was running up and down it, but one of us was always watching just in case. Again, 25+ years ago the world was a different place, what I remember getting up to.. I'd hate to think my son was doing the same, but it didn't kill me.. If they wanted time alone they should of thought of that before.
