Paul
I hate bloody computers:( Got myself a couple of new laptops and went to connect to AOL last night and it won't do it! Found out after loads of reading that Vista don't support the old USB modems so it won't work. The new laptops have wireless lan built in (think that's what it's called) well, they're wirelss jobbies:D They have written in all the info 'W-Lan 802.11 A/G' ? Looking on the AOL site I need to connect via ADSL (Got a BT line) and one router they say is OK is the Netgear DG834G, it would seem to suggest that all I need is this as it's got a modem built in? So techies, will this work, is it any good, do I need anything else other than the AOL software upgrade and why are PC world so sodding expensive when Amazon do it for nearly half the price? Are they the same product at the two stores? Thanks and sorry for being thick regarding these sort of things, the only way I can learn is to ask you guys;)
Wez
Yeah go with the Netgear and check ebuyer.com for good prices and large stocks.
Konrad
Go for 3Com router - not expensive and very stable. Also easy to configure http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116446
Paul
This is from the AOL help bit:blink: Compatible products are as follows: BT Voyager 190 ethernet modem NetGear DG834G wireless router NetGear DG834 wired router Thomson SpeedTouch 570 wireless modem router Thomson SpeedTouch 576 wireless modem router Thomson SpeedTouch 580 wireless modem router Thomson SpeedTouch 585 wireless modem router Thomson SpeedTouch 545 wired/wireless modem router Thomson SpeedTouch 510 wired modem router Thomson SpeedTouch 546 wired modem router So are they talking rubbish, can I use others as well? Are the wireless jobbies the same speed as connecting via a wire/lead? Thanks T

DaveK
I've got the Netgear and it's fine. As for the "easy to configure" comment on 3Com, Netgear is also very easy. The wizard does it all for you. Within 10 minutes of unpacking it, mine had configured itself and connected and 20 minutes later I'd made the connection secure.

Are the wireless jobbies the same speed as connecting via a wire/lead? Thanks T All modem/routers can be configured to work with AoL (or almost all). Wireless connection will be maximum 54Mbits, wired is always faster (100Mbits). All of them suppose to work in similiar manner, I offered 3Com, because this is company with ages of experience and is rather known from good quality products. I configured quite a few of them, when I was offering networking services and computer repair services, all working fine till today. No magic, no "special" super powers, just solid stable signal PS. If you want my advice about network provider - run as far as you can from AoL. Their support is worse then anything i stumbled across in 2 years of living in England, their service is also questionable. Do NOT install any crap they give you on CD, use windows configurators or router configurators.
Paul
Do you notice it being slower on wireless? I mean is it annoyingly slower. Bearing in mind I'm a numpty as far as PC stuff goes, I want something that'll work out of the box, ok loading software etc. but that's all I can be arsed to do really, don't want to get one that needs changing loads for it to work:)
Wez
54mb wireless is always going to be miles quicker than your AOL broadband connection so not an issue.

Of course there is no difference in speed in outside connection - AoL will give you nothing around max wireless/wired speeds of your Local Area Network. Difference I was talking about is, when you are copying from 1 computer to another in your LAN. If you want proper and secured connection, you would be better off to get someone, who is local to you to configure it for you. I know, instalators will do - it is just me liking to get to all smallest details
