Class One
Right I'm after something along the lines of o2's XDA. Ie I want something that can be a phone/play mp3's have tom/tom capability and even interweb access although not important). My friend has an O2 xda which he bought from ebay and for the price I'm quite impressed with what it does. I also like the idea that it uses an SD card to play/store mp3's and stuff because they're cheap and easy to use and also that it's easily transferrable from one car to another etc. Thoughts? I'm looking at spending perhaps £200-£300 ish.
SteveR
I got my Orange SPV M500 for free on my contract over a year ago. Does pretty much everything a PDA does AFAICT. I've installed TomTom6 on it (thanks Jake) and bought a seperate Bluetooth GPS reciever so it also doubles-up as sat nav.
Clarkey
Howabout this Doug ? http://www.nokia.co.uk/link?cid=EDITORIAL_29266 I've not personally tested that device, but a guy in my dept is currently working with it. From what I've seen of it - it's pretty good.
edge
Sold my Xda 2 i for £120 on flea bay. Its was ok but ran slow quite alot with frequent crashing with standard software . Now have an orange SPV M5000 and thats utter poop aswel but its work issue so dont care and its the 3rd ive had as they dont like being dropped where my old xda could take a bash. Ive heard good things on the smaller units though, Sorry dont know models or names
Jake
They are good for TomTom. The phone interface is a bit crap though. I'm not sure what software there is for playing mp3s cos I'm not into that, but I doubt windows media player is all that good.

edge
Edge, SteveR, Does the SPV M500/M5000 have a touch screen? Yeah its a full screen that flips up and acts like a mini laptop with keyboard http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=spv%20m5000&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
SteveR
Edge, SteveR, Does the SPV M500/M5000 have a touch screen? M500 yep - little 'pen' in the side is how you do all your writing/typing, but TomTom has big enough 'buttons' to be able to just use your finger. http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&q=spv+m500&btnG=Search+Images
Jake
Oooo no, I don't like the m5000. I think the m500 would be better for me. (I've broken my XDA2)

(I've broken my XDA2) There is probably a new version now, I think the M500 is a couple of years old but it suits me fine.

michael
I just parted with my XDA IIi, 2 extra cradles, 3 cases, 2 USB leads, 2 car chargers, 1GB Ultra II SD card, quality screen protector, TomTom and a Holux GPSlim 236 GPS receiver for £150 - after the reinstall of the OS to restore to default settings it was really solid, seemed faster too. As I've said before the phone software isn't the best (locks up at times, seems to be dialling but isn't) but regular soft resets sort this out. The camera is pointless for anything beyond capturing an idea of the object you want to photograph. I found it a little bulky to carry around all the time but really miss the big screen for movies. Plenty of alternative MP3 players available but I didn't have any complaints with media player, probably because I also encrypted with media player on my PC. 1GB SD will hold 2 movies in good resolution and the cards cost pennies these days so you can go crazy. My main gripe, as you can see from all the extra power leads, is that the battery life isn't great if you are using it in anger. Having said all this I prefer my new Nokia N95
Mas
I have the XDA Orbit for nearly 4 months now, it really a nice kit and I love it, but stupid me smashed it last week was in my pocket while working on the car and some how managed to crack the screen and as they are touch screen therefore I cant use it at all it doesnt turn on/off and you can't see a thing!! O2 didnt want to replace it ofcourse as I didn't want to insure it for £7.50 a month and now asking me £120 to replace the screen
Class One
Good stuff guys. No doubt most of these bits of kit that will have features that i will never fathom out. Camera isn't required but phone/tom tom/gps stuff is quite useful.

Jake
I read that the GPS software on the N95 sucks though. Also the integrated GPS receiver on the n95 doesn't work with TomTom.
JustGav
There is a fujitsu-siemens unit which has GPS built in, http://www.expansys.com/b.aspx?i=130765
michael
I read that the GPS software on the N95 sucks though. Also the integrated GPS receiver on the n95 doesn't work with TomTom. The built-in GPS software is adequate and the navigation efficient enough but it's not to the same standard as TomTom. TomTom doesn't work with the N95 at present but that's their issue not Nokias, apparently they are working on it and plan to release a patch.
