rik
After getting my car mot'd on Saturday morning, my rear lights decided that they would stop working in the evening. I checked the fuse first and it was ok, checked the bulbs and they too are ok. When the lights are switched on, the number plate light comes on along with the front lights. The brake lights also work fine. I have also checked the plugs where they go onto the loom in the boot Anybody have any ideas or had a similar problem? rik
Checked the fuse again, the one thats indicated for the rear lights, but no change. i'm wondering if it could be an earth problem? There is an earth bolted to the centre of the rear panel, is this the one that serves the loom in the boot? I might try earthing a wire to the body and hold it on to the bulb holder, see if they work then.
rik
my first thought would be a stuck relay, but i'm not sure if the rears have a relay or the location if they do Thanks...I've found this plan which shows a taillight relay next to the fuse box. I'll check that tomorrow. http://www.mkiv.com/manual/1995_electrical_manual/F/95elec_020.JPG
rik
Right, so this is the tail light relay. How do you test a relay to see if it's faulty? Shouldn't they click when activated maybe?

Shouldn't they click when activated maybe? i would think it would click, also have a look at it as it might be the same as another relay somewhere in the car, then you can swap them round and move the fault
rik
I put a post up earlier on progress today, but it's been lost in cyberspace Anyway, the relay gives a definite click when the lights are switched on, and when the bulb is earthed to the body there's no change. So it's not an earth problem, must be power supply problem. Remember the numberplate light comes on, and they're on the same power supply by the looks of the loom in the boot. Really doing my head in now. Haven't been able to go out in it in the evenings yet since getting the car on the road, and thats the only time i get to drive it really. Bit of an odd one, but any ideas anyone?
rik
Getting desperate now I've just checked the relay, and it appears to be fine. So i made a wire and plugged it in across the two terminals that are connected once the relay throws the switch. Still no result. I then put a bulb in the loop and plugged that into the relay live, and earthed it on the car body. The bulb did not light up, indicating no power at the relay live terminal. Anyone have any ideas, is there any other fuses that control this?

rik
Think i may have found the reason. It looks like it could be the light failure unit in the boot. There is power going into it, but nothing coming out. And on the back there is a small indentation where it may have burned out. It also smells like it's burned out. I'll get me another one of these and see what happens. Our resident parts Lord will be notified

ads274
I had this problem the other day and it turned out to be some dodgy wiring to the rear lights using scotch locks where someone had obviously done a bit of DIY. It was easily sorted. Foz also had this same problem and it turned out to be a dead relay box. Has to be either of those issues i reckon.
