Scary Moment

Two-Two

Recommended Posts

I was joining the motorway the other day and accelerated from 40 to 60 to pass another car. Took my foot off the accelerator to slow down but the car kept going at 60. The brakes slowed the car but it went back to 60 when when I took my foot off.

By now the motorway was approaching a right hand turn and the car was showing no inclination to slow down. Put it in neutral (the Supra is an auto) and the engine went mental, revving all the way to the red line!

I brought the car to a halt on the hard shoulder and called Green Flag. The mechanic checked the throttle cable, transmission fluid etc and all was fine.

When I set off again it behaved itself and has done ever since.

A visit to my usual garage similarly drew a blank; the throttle cable was fine. All they could suggest was it might be a problem with the throttle return valve.

During the incident there were no warning lights showing and the accelerator was not jammed down.

I was wondering if anyone had experienced a similar problem. It takes the edge of your driving pleasure if you think the car could turn into robocop at any moment.

Cheers

Could be cruise, but there's quite a few things in the C.C. circuit that should stop it from going mad. Eg putting foot on brake, shifting into neutral.

Was the accelerator pedal returning when you lifted off, or was it sticking down?

I didn't have the CC on at the time and the pedal did return after I took my foot off it.

I also checked the floor to see if there were any loose objects that could have got into the throttle mechanism but nothing there.

A bit of a brown trouser moment!

never ever heard of this on a Supra. I know that the one of the Ford 4x4 things had that problem (it was the one designed for the yank market). But never heard it happen to a Supra.

I have seen a situation where the toyota racing pedal set for an auto makes the brake and accelerator too close together and people with big feet can hit the brake and accelerator together, which in an auto is an amusing situation.

be interesting to hear if it happens again and if you ever find the cause.
