Poncho
I was recently given my girlfriends old laptop, which is great because i have never had one before, so i rushed out and brought a wireless card for it:) Now, i have followed the instruction manual fully and cant seem to get the laptop to go on the internet, it will connect to the router, and i can ping it, but thats it. I got a friend to bring his laptop over to make sure it was all set up right, and he had no problems, was connected in 5 mins! I know its a long shot, but any ideas? Whitesupraboy2
wep key is ok, made sure of that, the laptop does have windows firewall on it, and zone alarm too. disable both, then try the net again for a minute. If it works, try disabling 1 and test again.

rovervi
Can you ping websites? Have you made sure that DHCP is turned on and there are no manual IP addresses entered instead?

MrRalphMan
Normally if you can reach the router and nothing else, it's a bad WEP key. Have you tried removing the key and seeing if it connects then? Does the router have MAC address filtering set on? If so you need to add the MAC address of the wireless card in the lap top.
rovervi
it can ping the router, but not websites. dont know about DHCP, will have to look, where will i find that? go into wireless properties and then internet protocol (tcp/IP) properties and there it should say use DNS
Poncho
right, got rid of wep key, still the same. turned off zonealarm completely, still nothing. and with DNS, i set it as the routers IP, i also had to set all the IP's for the laptop and gateway manually, if i made it auto detect, it didnt work at all.
