Another reason to hate my job.

I got offered the chance to design a catalogue for one of our bigger customers this week. I jumped at the chance not just to work on something different but to gain new skills and have something extra to add to my CV.

I had a couple of meetings about the project and actually thought about how to lay it all out etc at home! Which is a first for me.

I'd even been told that I'd be going to a meeting with our customer which would have been another first.

Even better than all that was my dept. manager said he'd been pushing for a pay increase for me and had used this new project to prompt them yet again.

Then today, with the briefest of explanations they cancel the whole thing. No cool project, no meeting, no working with design software and probably no pay rise.

I can understand (partly) why it was cancelled but I wish they'd waited until they'd ruled out all the options before calling me into the project. Sadly, this isn't the first time they've built my hopes up only to cancel on me so I was actually expecting it.

Oh well.

Was that a joke Martin? You seem to have forgotten the smiley.....:)

No joke! That's what I earn. I was actually earning more than this 10 years ago.

I work in our purchasing dept. I can spend tens of thousands of pounds every day with all the worry that brings with it. Yet, I don't earn anywhere near what the rest of the dept. earn! Most of the time is spent looking at pages and pages of stock info and working out what needs ordering. It's so boring I would have eaten my own head for a chance to do this catalogue. I was chosen as I have *cough* an artistic sensibility and I'm "good with computers".

There is no overtime and I work 08:30 to 17:00 mon-fri.

...and yes, it's hard to run a Supra on that kind of money. I've applied elsewhere but I have had no luck whatsoever. In fact, I'm wondering if I'm on some list of dodgy people who shouldn't be given a job, least, not one that pays well.:(

Jesus mate!! Sometimes I realise how lucky I am.....

I think you need to seriously make a move. The best way to improve your salary is to change companies. I increased my salary by 5K last year although I did leave one company after 3.1/2 years, did another job for 4 weeks and then went to the company I am at now!! At each interview they asked me what I was on and then they beat it by a couple of grand..:)

Life is too short mate. If they appreciated you, they would pay you more. Easy for me to say though I suppose.......:innocent:

I'm kinda trying to move elsewhere. I'm kinda hindered though by no-one offering me even an interview.

Why?? When I met you this week you seem like a really likeable guy. Unless people read this forum they won't know what you are really like.........:D

Is your CV well presented and up to date? What industry do you work in? If you do purchasing then that could apply to any industry I suppose!

Why do you put up with it? You certainly have an opinion on here and it's (normally) an intelligent one. Do a diploma, a course, anything. You are worth more man.

Why do I put up with it? Maybe it pays the bills and put food on the table. I'd like to not put up with it and go elsewhere but I'm having no luck with that. I could just walk out and be in an even worse position I s'pose.

I've seen his CV, I really can't understand the problem to be honest, I'd interview him.... but have no jobs....

Martin, how about taking a risk and going for a 6 month IT contract job doing desktop support / rollout / project support work? It's something any computer literate person can do, you have the people skills and there seems to be a fair bit about at the moment. Or use your existing skills and transfer them to IT in a Procurement type role?

Have a look over http://www.jobserve.com and register your CV on there, IT Procurement, Asset Management, Project Support... £10 an hour > £200 a day - once that's on your CV you'll be in a good position.

Thanks for the link, Michael. I've tried several of these sorts of job sites with no real luck ("...it's based in Liverpool. Do you have your own transport?") but I shall sign up with this one. You have a knack of only recommending good things.;)

That sounds good Martin!! It is difficult to change your career once you go down a certain path though!! Just this week I was on about going back into the Police. Although my job has a good wage and a lot of perks, you must be happy.

If I think back to my days as an apprentice, I earned fook all but had a right laugh. Although that wouldn't have paid the bills and fed the wife and the three kids I have now!!

A balance must be found, me thinks!!
