cheekymonkey
Saw this in the metro this morning, made my blood run cold. Sympathy to the family of the guy that died, and hope his wife recovers. Could well be that us "car types" get even less sympathy from the public now, even though it's amazing how little this actually happens. Most of the accidents we get to hear about are lorries / drunk drivers / teenagers.
paul_y3k
I'm pretty sure he's the same guy I watched on the US Gumball with a UK flag on the top going like a bat out of hell through heavy traffic....I'm pretty sure he's been riding his luck for a while. yeah i was thinking the same. i remember a clip of him in russia going down the sides of a row of lorrys on the pavement side of the road at stupid speeds and thinking ohh crap ! whats the betting the drivers still do alot of the rally themseves anyway ? steb9780
I read on the AOL logon page that the people who got arrested at the border didn't run for it. They caused the accident waited for emegency services to arrive etc. Then carried on with the race, but once they got to the border the man had died so they were then arrested. Don't know really how much of that's true though.
Havard
If they have legged it and then been caught, I wouldn't give a squirt of pi$$ for their ares right now!! I bet the prison food in Macedonia isn't much to write home about!! H.
Chiefgroover
I always thought this was a bit of a silly event. IF they wanted to go really hard and safe, a tour of european tracks would have been the best option (all drivers being breathalized before starting) so they could get the speed out of their system and cruise quietly between venues. This was going to be a sooner or later, maximum disgrace they will have over this. Did anyone from this club enter?
Chiefgroover
AOL news reported this Mr Cepulyoski died in hospital from a heart attack after the crash on Wednesday. He had not been involved in the race. The Gumball 3000 has been a draw for the rich and famous for almost a decade, speeding through Europe in high powered sports cars by day and enjoying lavish parties by night. It is believed the two men waited at the scene until ambulance crews arrived to help the driver of the second car, before rejoining the race towards the Albanian border. It is thought the men reported the accident to police when they arrived at the border, and were asked to give statements. But it is understood that as they returned to the border to continue their trip they were told the other person involved had died and were taken back to a nearby police station. neil tt
Still doen't sound too good, wanting to carry on with the race, after a bad crash and almost killing someone at the same time
michael
Is it carrying on the race or accepting a lift to somewhere "safe" rather than being stuck on the side of a road in Macedonia? It all sounds rather foggy at the moment.
Ewen
Massive media divide between 'failing to help injured, fleeing the scene and attempted escape from the country', or 'waiting till the emergency services arrived and then getting a lift to the border where they immediately reported the incident'. Hope the truth is somewhere nearer the latter.
colsoop
I'm pretty sure he's the same guy I watched on the US Gumball with a UK flag on the top going like a bat out of hell through heavy traffic....I'm pretty sure he's been riding his luck for a while. I was thinking the same, that guy was pulling off some seriously daft maouiveures last time i watched it Although i dont believe the hype from the media
Peter P
It's not the guy with the Union Jack on the roof from the previous Gumball. These 2 are millionaire businessman running a property company in Manchester from what i've found. The media are indeed stirring trouble as per usual by leading two totally different circumstances! 1) They were in a convoy at speed, hit the VW Golf and fearing the consequences jumped in another Gumball car and headed for the border to escape charges. 2) They were in a convoy travelling within the speed limit when they were involved in an accident with a VW Golf. The drivers called in the accident to local authorities and awaited arrival of emergency services at the scene. Once the innocent parties from the VW Golf had been attended to and taken to hospital for treatment, the drivers of the totalled Porsche took a lift to the next checkpoint to arrange for the cars recovery and start the ball rolling on insurance paperwork etc. When they approached the border they were held as the driver of the VW Golf had subsequently died from a heart attack. If it's 1 then they deserve the lot thrown at them!! If it's 2 then they did everything the right way and were unlucky as this could have happened to anyone. All i'm saying is don't start jumping on band wagons just yet and follow the crowd of jealous people who think this is just some rich public school boy event. Yes it costs £28,000 to enter a team but it has had 9 good years with excellent attendance from a vast array of celebrities from around the globe. It makes entertaining viewing and with some obvious exceptions including the idiot in the Porsche with the Union Jack on the roof is generally done in a controlled and responsible manner. Watch this space as until I hear from the 2 involved or Maximillion Cooper I'm a bit sceptical. Just my opinion. Pete
boombastictiger
Accidents happen all the time, rallys or no rallys, drunk people drive home from the pub and kill people, people on drugs etc etc...the rally is a bit of fun, its not as if its on every day, once a year, and the organisers do try and control and make things as organised as they can...I dont see why they had to shut down the whole race because of one accident, I mean it was a big possibility that it could have happaned, (9 years etc), and if the person driving the porsche tried doing a runner then he should be totally responsible for his actions, not gumball.... If the guy done a hit and run then I think he should get whats comming to him.... If it was a general accident and no real stupidity involved, then he should just follow the procedures of the country, accidents happan everyday..maybe it was just a mistake that caused the accident, gumball doenst even need to come into the equation.. In a convoy, if you were travelling to santa pod and you had an accident and someone got killed, does it mean the organisers of santa pod should be to blame as well and close down the event....or should the driver be accountable... Millsy
Not being funny but I've always been amazed that people make such a big deal of the Gumball and the like. Used to have this problem when deciding whether to put features in the mag I used to work on. I mean, loads of rich guys in expensive cars driving totally illegally through other peoples countries. Fair enough doing it, but in such a publicized way - doesn't make much sense and seemes like pointless showing off and disrespect. And from a moral point of view, knowing people that have been on these - I can't get my head around how people drive all day, get drunk then get up early and drive the whole of the next day - personally that sounds like hell to me and not worth paying thousands of pounds for. Plus, I'm sure plenty of people drive off half drunk still. It's not surprising there are always accidents and it was only a matter of time until someone got killed. The whole thing is on the edge of legality anyway so I imagine this sad event will put pay to it happening in the future. Personally I think this is a good thing. Not against people driving quickly abroad if the roads and conditions are right and they're taking every precaution - but over tired loons in supercars showing off to each other or TV cameras can't be a good thing. Angarak
I had a close shave with a couple of these Gumball w*nkers jumping a red light at speed in London a couple years back, thankfully the taxi driver saw them out the corner of his eye and jumped on the brakes, if he hadnt Im pretty sure I would have been wiped out by them. I have no sympathy whatsoever for the w*nkers who enter this and drive dangerously. If they did do a runner I hope they get the maximum sentence available.
