jeremyh
http://81.149.22.169/misc/01052007.jpg WTF!! Who what where why when and how has this happened? What do I need to do, and is the car still driveable? Jez
flukey-lukey
It looks like a water piper with a hole in it, obviously over time the hose has started to perish. Because of the positioning of the hose (and the hole), the steam looks to be making its' way under the plug cover and out through the vents. hope this helps
CJ
Is it steam or smoke? What happened before it started to do that? Were you driving along?

Class One
What was your temp gauge reading? Do you have any water left in your expansion tank? (DON'T try and open up your radiator at the minute)
Konrad
Looks like smoke - oil burning
jeremyh
If it helps, temperature gauge reading was at MAX It was definitely steam, not smoke, and the car was fine for 50 miles prior to this happening...it happened all at once, hence I pulled over to see what was going on. I've just found out that my engine coolant bottle is EMPTY...
markrzs
white sludge in the oil filler cap ?
Pig
Oh dear, sounds like you have had some sort of major failure from your rad Temps at max is never a good sign, could have warped head???
Ian W
Looks like smoke - oil burning really? I would have said it looks more like steam to me. the temp guage reading max would suggest it's spewed out coolant somewhere. lets hope it's came out externally and the car hasn't ran for too long without any. Soonto_HAS_soop
OH Fuck.... Looking at the location of most of the steam, I would say that you have blown a section of your head gsaket out, or a core plug is leaking - badly. Whatever it is, it is NOT an easy fix. Picture looks cool though.
Dave
looks like you have a hole in a water pipe somewhere on the right hand side .cant see it being head gasket but have you checked for water in the oil? DONT DRIVE IT or you will cook the engine
TrickTT
Steam appears to be coming from under the plug cover. There's no water pipes under there so I would guess at a cracked head
Soonto_HAS_soop
Is there a giant puddle of water under the car, or nothing at all? Did the steam stay there for ages or disperse quickly once you opened the bonnet? Did you lose any power in the run up to stopping?
jeremyh
Hi all, Thanks for the replies, and I've found the problem! It was a water piper with a hole in it, obviously over time the hose has started to perish. Because of the positioning of the hose (and the hole), the steam was making its' way under the plug cover and out through the vents. Will hopefully track down some black water hose tommorrow Thanks again all for the replies, you're never alone in this place! Jez
Pig
Sounds like a lucky escape. Did you drive it for long when it over heated?
jeremyh
No, as soon as I noticed the steam I pulled over, a guy came over from his house and was really helpful, by the time I pulled over I was only half a mile away from my house anyway.
