Is this symptomatic of a warped disk

After the Santa Pod runs, I noticed a noise coming from the Passenger side of the car, this was a regular short metallic rubbing sound which varied with speed and if the brakes were applied the noise got much louder.

 

I assumed this was a warped disk. However when I cleaned the car yesterday having been away all week I noticed the front passenger wheel was covered in a rusty powder. where you would expect brake dust.

 

Is this consistent with a warped disk, or does this indicate something else is amiss.

 

I have some very bad mobile photos which are attached below. I plan to take the wheel and brakes off tomorrow to have a better look, but would appreciate any input as to whether this sounds like the correct diagnosis, or what else might be wrong.

 

I also noticed that the disk surface seems to have some pitting on it. :(

i think warped discs give a "wobbling" feeling through the steering wheel under breaking.

 

That's what my front disks did when I warped them a few weeks back. I wasn't aware of anything while in motion, but under braking they vibrated very heavily. I could feel it more through the brake pedal than through the steering wheel. Unfortunately it threw my front wheels out of balance (which I could obviously feel, especially at speed) which I've had to have sorted since!

 

When it came to changing them, you could see the warp if you span the disk - it appeared to get closer to each pad in turn. Take your wheel off and have a look!

You really need to take a wheel off and have a look.

 

Pads don't always wear evenly, you need to check the inside to see if there's anything left on them.

 

On the UK brakes there's a metal clip fitted which rubs against the disc to warn you when the pads are low.

So the general consensus is that this is unlikely to be a warped disk - I'll let you all know what I find when I take the wheel off tomorrow :(

Given what merckx has said, it could be. I warped my disks before the pads got low enough to rub the metal clips so I'm not sure what that sounds like. My inside pads were both wearing very unevenly, and were only actually braking over about 50% of their total area. I'm not sure if that could have contributed to the vibration I experienced.

Looks like one or more pads is worn down to the steel backing plate, which is now eating a brake disc.

 

yeah that ! but its probably the discs are worn and the pads are low and starting to wear the lip on the disc ! ;)

Right everyone thanks for your input...

 

I took the wheels off today and had a closer look, the disks look in pretty good condition, no lip on the edge, and spin reasonably freely..

 

The pads, now there's a different story, Drivers side has about 1 mm left, and the Passenger side has less than none !! rears have about 3-4mm but I think I'll replace them anyway.

 

So new pads all round for me.

I took the wheels off today and had a closer look, the disks look in pretty good condition, no lip on the edge, and spin reasonably freely..

 

The pads, now there's a different story, Drivers side has about 1 mm left, and the Passenger side has less than none !! rears have about 3-4mm but I think I'll replace them anyway.

 

So new pads all round for me.

I received my replacement pads on Friday morning - many many thanks to Chris Wilson - and with Dodgy's help we set about changing the pads yesterday morning.

 

I was worried about the caliper pins as I hadn't managed to get any replacements ordered from Toyota. but thankfully everything went well. with only minor persuasion required on one of the rear calipers. However upon seeing the pads I'm horrified at how bad they were. I'm also incredibly surprised that I hadn't noticed any braking issues other than the rust that appeared at Pod, and the noise issues experienced on the way home.

 

But here for your delight and entertainment are is the horror story that is my old pads.

 

Picture 1 shows the Drivers side front pads in comparison to the new ones fitted.

On the left is the pad from the inner surface of the disk, and on the right the one from the outer surface.

 

Picture 2 shows a profile of the outer surface pad with a new one.

 

Pictures 3 and 4 show the cause of my problems. As you can see I had plenty of pad material left there :scare:

 

This was the pad on the inner disk surface, the one on the outer surface still had about the same pad material as the outer one on the driver side.

 

So just a heads up to you all - check your pads :faint:

Are the discs scored? If so they will eventually settle down, to soem extent, but they will give unusually excessive pad wear. Just covering my backside in case the new pads don't last as long as expected :) You did indeed get your moneys worth from the old ones!

The rear face of the disk is slightly scored, but don't worry I won't hold you responsible if they wear down quickly.
