engine swap

after a long think about the future of my NA, I have decided that I want to keep it, and not get another supra, as the bodywork etc is virtually perfect.

 

However, I want more power and decided that as opposed to and NA-T, I would prefer a TT engine in there. Damn going to turbofit and hearing those lovely engine sounds.

 

Could someone please give me an indication of the cost envolved, and also who I could speak to about this.

 

actually, any advice on where to start would be great. if it matters I have a 1994 NA manual.

well its been done.............i think Intercooler stuff, engine loom + ecu are minimums on top of getting the engine (if it has all ancillaries etc).

 

going auto means a potentially more reliable drive train.....but you'll need prop diff (driveshafts?) etc.....plus some interior bits and pieces.......

 

Staying manual and using the stock prop and diff (prob open)etc means possible clutch/gearbox problems, and NA gearing.......

 

Going to 6 speed is expensive...........

 

Easiest way IMO is stick to the 5 speed, live with the short'ish' gearing and budget for an immediate uprated clutch......

 

Does your car have abs?

 

When you've spent all the money required will it really end up being any better than say the Red uk auto for sale at £6500 ono?

when you say usual bill, what would that be for? and where would it be done...

 

could I expect to walk in, hand over £3500, come back in a week and have a TT waiting for my right foot??

 

If so, i think i'll take one!!!

Hi Stuart,

 

You might want to speak to Jezzy (aka "jezzybabes"). You never know - he might have a TT engine you could have (although suspect these get snapped up pretty quick).

 

I would probably stick with the manual you have (although possibly a few issues of having a 5-speed box which isn't quite as strong apparently). Of course my autobox is now available if you want that ;-)

 

I can see your reasoning for sticking with your car. The way I see it, it takes time to buy and sell cars to get what you want ("time = money"), and you can consider it a hobby getting from what you have to what you really want - I've learnt quite a bit (still loads more to learn!).

Yes thats about right. Buy a complete kit from Jezzy - £1700 ish, then the rest is labour.

I did my TT engine conversion a couple of weeks back. I bought the (ultra low mileage!!) TT engine, autobox, turbo's and everything else needed for the conversion from Jezzybabes and did the conversion myself in a just over a weekend (was spread out over a few days waiting for various bit's and bobs i'd forgotten)

Hi Rick, Thanks, the car runs ALOT faster now, and sounds superb with the turbo whistle!! it drinks a little bit more fuel now aswell, but that's to be expected!

 

Oh and it's a little bit more of a handful in the wet, but i need wider wheels at the back to help with that a little.

 

I need to update my garage soon with pics of the TT engine rather than the NA

sounds really promising, I don't think i'm quite up to doing the swap myself. I'm not really up to changing the oil myself if I'm brutally honest?!?! want to do another one?? lol

 

when you say every everything else needed for the conversion, what else did you buy? could you pm me a list, or post here.

right, here's is the list of parts i got from jezzy, i'm remembering as i go so the list will get longer!!

 

engine complete with all anscillaries, alternator, air con pump, power steering pump, power steering reservoir etc.

TT automatic Gearbox (this was left attached to the engine)

TT automatic gearbox support bracket.

Turbo's and all associated pipework (again these were still bolted to the engine)

Engine wiring loom.

Ignitor pack.

TT engine ECU

TT automatic gearbox ECU

Side mount intercooler plus all intercooler pipework.

Standard airbox plus pipework.

TT viscous fan (different than on the NA)

Prop shaft (both sections)

Dial cluster from a TT. (The NA rev counter doesn't work with a TT engine conversion and the speedo reads slightly out)

 

 

with the prop shaft I had a bit of trouble, where the prop shaft bolts up to the rear diff. On the TT the hole centres are larger than those on the NA. I did manage to bolt the prop shaft to the NA diff but it took a while!!

 

I would advise to avoid this problem in getting a TT LSD aswell. In hindsight I should have done this!

Great sense of acheivment as well i bet as you did it yourself?

 

Was it much of a balls ache to swap as might choose to go this way myself??

Yes it was a great sense of acheivement! after a weekend of great frustration!!:D

 

It was a bit of a ball ache as it was pretty new to me. now I know what's involved it's not that bad.

 

If either of you guys decide to go down this route I'll be more than willing to lend a hand.

Anychance anyone can put up a list of everything you need if keeping your 5speed manual box?

 

I presume it would be pretty much the same as the auto conversion, except you wouldn't need the auto box, support bracket or prop shaft.

 

not sure what would need to be done with regards to the ECU as the TT never came with a 5 speed 'box, so not sure if a 6spd ECU or the auto ECU would work.

 

Oh and you would most definitely need an uprated clutch.

You can use any TT ecu....... You control the box, so the ECU doesnt care haow many gears you have!

 

Its a great conversion, I did one for Iain2010.... It was very fun..

 

He went BPU too, and that was very interesting, but again more expensive!

When I supply the whole shabbang for a Na-TT conversion, the engine itself will come complete straight out of its donor engine bay in one lump. Turbo side untouched, and inlet side untouched. Full engine harness still attached. So basically a complete 'running' unit ready to bolt in. Intercooler and pipework, power steering pot, and master cylinder vac hose all supplied. And as Jim said, anything you need along the way but find to be missing, is included. 5 GTE setups in stock currently. :)

yep wiring looms are slightly different, fusebox will need re wiring as the n/a plugs are different,quite simple just need to rewire in for efi no2 relay and fuel pump relay as i recall.best is to get a cut tt fusebox and just change the plug side to the n.a and swap the connectors for the appropriate relays.ecu side is one small difference of the white connector(not the earth one on n/a) just ignore that unless your planning on rewiring the whole front end for the trac control/uprated abs.. since most people run without trac anyway...good luck m8

 

fyi as already stated you can run any stock tt ecu on a 5 spd but obviously you do get a engine check light
