Car back on the road but cooked it!

After a week of stress and hassle I finally got the car running again this afternoon, new cambelt, new water pump and new core plug that was the cause of all my trouble.

Put it all back together again, let it run up to temperature and it was fine. Took it for a blast keeping my eye on temp, oil light etc and all seemed well, was really pleased and smug. But, about 3 miles from home and looked down the the temp gauge had suddenly, I mean suddenly because I had looked a few moments before, shot off scale. Pulled up imediately and as soon as I opened the bonnet spotted the schoolboy error. The thermostat end of the bottom hose was off. I had slipped the pipe back on and not put the clip back...ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Put it back on and just trickled a little water back in the system as I didn't want to shock it with it being so hot. Seemed ok so after a few minutes I carried on re-filling it. Man was it seriously hot or what. put what water i had with me in and then went back home taking it nice and gentle.

I am guessing that the pressure built up and blew the hose clean off because it wasn't clipped, how bloody annoyed with myself am I?

When I got back I let it cool a bit and then topped right up with water. Took it for another drive, nice and carefull and then as it all seemed ok took it for spirited drive. The temp gauge stayed at normal and every time I checked the heater it was blowing hot air, suggesting that the water was circulating through the head and not compressing. Did about 10 miles up and down through the gears driving hard and no problems showed up.

Reckon I have done any lasting damage? I have checked the oil and that seems water free and looking in the rad seems oil free also.

lucky

if it had overheated lots it would have probably blown the headgasket or warped the head and you would know about it

I will do a sniff test next week and see if that shows any gasses in the coolant before I drain the water and put 4 life back in.
