Jake
I've been asked me to put some more RAM in a laptop. I've taken the back off but as far as I can see there is only one memory slot (those weird hinged mem module things laptops have) with a single 256MB stick in it. I tried some spare RAM from a Dell but it's slightly different, the slot in the middle of the contacts is like 1mm further along. Anyway, the laptop is a ESystem 3089UK Celeron M420 1.6GHz The existing 256MB RAM has the following on a sticker: P/N:78.82G54.420 S/N:230652210310 RoHS 256MB SOD PC2-4300 CL4 Apacer Does any of that mean anything to anyone? I need to order say 1GB of the correct type to replace the 256 module. Thanks for any help.
Kranz
Some memory sellers websites will automatically check what memory you need by checking the PC online. http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CLadkfX654sCFQzllAodXDugQQ has one. Try kingston memory? Or Orcalogic.co.uk (where I got mine from, V good). There may be a limit to how big you can go. Check out the suppliers first. Kranz
256MB SOD PC2-4300 CL4 You want a 512MB or 1GB SOD PC2-4300 CL4. Make sure it has the whole SOD PC2-4300 CL4 in the spec as many are very similar but not right!

I did try Crucial already but they don't have ESystem as a listed manufacturer.

I had a look too but nobody lists it. Emachines are listed though, but not the same thing by the look of it.
Jake
I downloaded the app from Orca and ran it on the laptop. It says the existing RAM is DDR2-SDRAM PC2-4300 (266 MHz) SO-DIMM (67.6 x 3) So I looked for that but they only list 4200 on their site! Pete
Ideally they should be added in pairs, but given the price of current RAM you may be just better off buying one new stick or a new pair. Doesn't matter too much what you choose then. ie.DDR2-333 might be more available or cheaper and still work fine.
ivan
Don't forget it's a laptop Pete. Usually mem for those is OK in singles (and not in sticks either)

(POS that it is, TBH) I just need someone who knows about this kinda thing to tell me what exactly to buy. I'd be gutted to get the wrong stuff, specially seeing as it's not mine. Looking for 1GB really, around £80 is fine. Go on Pete, you know about this stuff duncha?
DamanC
Here you Jake, this is what you want. I cant find any memory specific to that notebook so it should take generic memory. Kingston memory loves to be as generic as they come. Strange that it reads 4300, althou ive had machines that have read 3300 and 3200 has worked nicely
Jake
Nice one Daman - thanks! Cheaper than I thought too. Up yours Pete!
Pete
Up yours Pete! I don't handle the sales side of stuff so do not have all the answers to hand, was going to ask the bods to use the Kingston reseller tools to identify your NB etc this morning. This is the first time I've had to sit down all day. Kingston RAM is top quality and what I've just put in my notebook. Don't forget it's a laptop Pete. Usually mem for those is OK in singles (and not in sticks either) Indeed...notebooks don't have dual channel support.
michael
Jake, it's possible that there might be some memory hiding under the keyboard, quite a few companies seem to think it's amusing to put it there. Obviously not the case if it only reports the 256mb you've found though.
