I have oil escaping from somewhere!

Firstly, I don't have oil patches under the car when it's been stationary. This may be due to the undertray however the undertray has very little oil (as in almost none) on it.

I'm basically seeing oil on the front facing underside of the oil sump and on the underside of whatever bit of the engine is immediately infront of the sump.

It looks like something is leaking and causing a mist of oil to apply to the underside.

This may explain why I need oil every 4000-ish miles!

Any suggestions? I'm sure it's bound to be expensive to fix.:(

Sorry to be a scare monger, but it sounds suspiciously like a weeping front oil seal, but having said that it could be seeping from elsewhere, oil has a nasty habit of traveling everywhere.

That's the same thing as this Chris Wilson thread. Am I right?

You don't have an oil cooler fitted round the front anywhere do you?

I don't think so unless the stock TT came with one.

Also, sometimes (and it is just sometimes) upon start up after the car has sat overnight or during the time I'm in work, the oil pressure light flickers on briefly.

It doesn't come on at all at idle and or when parked on level ground. My works car park and my driveway both slope.

Related?

That is probably just related to the location of the sensor and the way the oil has ended up pooling that takes a little time for the oil to build pressure up correctly.

Pictures of your problem may aid in locating any cause.

:)

Have a look at the back pax side cam area; I have been getting bits of engine oil drips but no real loss of oil as you describe.

Its quite hard to get to but Im sure thats a weak spot, so if yours is in front of this can u see any coming from the covers?

When I checked my cover bolts they were all very loose!

Im going to buy new gaskets when I get chance. The rear of my bell housing gets quite oily but as yet I havent been able to absolutely identify.

What oil filter is on it? Does it have an anti drain back valve?

Stock Toyota filter

Leak sounds like oil pump seal (crankshaft front seal is another name for same thing). Could be cam seal(s) and running down. You need to get the front covers and cam belt and cam pulleys off the engine and have a proper look.

That sounds like a job for someone both technically minded and who know what to look for.
