Nitrous Oxide and the law?

I'm not an expert on the law but think its illegal to have the bottle in your car whilst on the roads.

i was told you can but you need a green warning sticker, which would be quite cool. also i heard you can have it if you dont brake the speed limit with it, but breaking the speed limit is illegal anyway

Think youre ok to have it in the car as long as you display the green badge and the bottle is disconnected.

seems like a lot of money to have a disconected bottle in the boot as i am never taking my car on a track, may just get the sticker and refuse to open my boot

Its illegal to have it connected to the endgine on a public road. But you have it on a purge kit etc.

Yeah i think that's right. I remember Suprababe getting pulled over on a London meet by police on bikes in Soho. She was told off i belive as your allowed it installed but the bottle needs to be disconnected on the public highway.

I seem to remember reading that it is legal to have it installed but illegal to actually use it on the public highway. (I cold be wrong tough???)

your right, you can have it in your car and be plumbed in but you cant use it,it has to be turned off,and you have to have the green sticker to show people that it may explode.

there was a chap a while back who put nos in his TVR Griff 500 (as if their not quick enough!) he was telling their club mag that he just couldnt get insured for it as no one would cover him and the only loop hole was if he did not have the bottles attached when on the road.

Unless there's been a change in the last couple of years it's not against the law to use nitrous oxide on the road.

http://www.roadsidelawyer.co.uk/questions/is-a-nitrous-oxide-modification-legal-for-road-use-in-the-uk

I suppose there are two ways of running a legal system

1) everything is legal unless it's prohibited

2) everything is illegal unless it's allowed

The UK uses method 1 :)

Insurance is a different matter.

i pm'ed a police officer and he says:

According to the Ministry of Transport vehicle construction & use regulations, the Highway Code and the MOT handbook there is no law prohibiting the use of nitrous injection.

However just as with any tuning modification, the owner must inform their insurance company and obtain adequate cover otherwise any performance modification would be illegal.

Therefore the only way you will break the law by having your street car fitted with a nitrous kit is if you fail to inform your insurance company that you have one.

When i last enquired with Sky (the club insurer) the 2 things they wouldn't allow were Nitrous & roll cages.

If you requested them to, they would however put a special request in to Ensign for them to consider it.

Just thought i'd say in case someone was going to get the kit first & then enquire about the insurance.

can you let us know if your engine pops before i think about getting mine?

It has a bad reputation which is not based on all the facts, I am told as long as your engine is in good condition it is save to run NOS and it gives the best power gains for fairly cheap spend

If it goes pop it gives me an excuse to have a fully built engine ;)
