Air Con Dead (HOW MUCH TO REPAIR!!)

Ok guys my air con has had a leek for a while now, the last time it ran out they put some dye into the system to locate the problem! car went back in today and yes they have found the leek!

This is what ive been told "you need a new Reciever Dryer air con condenser" ok i said, how much for the whole job? around £700 he told me:shock:

Now this seems a lot to me, but the guy thats doing the work i FULLY trust and has looked after the car for the last 4 years! and normally his prices are very good!

He has told me that the main part alone is £272.20 inc vat from toyota, and then there are a few other pipes that need replacing, and also there is alot of bits that have to come off to get to that part hence the total price!

Now does this sound about right? and does anyone know if i can get this part any cheaper?

thanks for any advice... chris..

P.s what a great birthday present!!

i would be really intetested to know how big a job it is?

my compressor went about 6 months ago, it looks like a fairly easy job to change.......its all at the front of the engine?

is a compressor the same as a "Reciever Dryer air con condenser" unit......lol?

i need to find a sec hand one and get it fitted, but i know aircon places charge a small fortune just to re-gas these days!

i would hate to get a quote from them for the job!

cheers.

Anyone out there know how long it would take to do this job?

I presume its the same part!

Also this quote includes the last refill with dye and another refill once fixed! and i think its £50 a refill..

Im starting to wonder if i really need the aircon! had to happen in the summer and just when i had the cash to go bpu:(

The condenser is the aircon radiator, and a reciever drier is a cylinder-type-thing

Haven't looked at the aircon system yet, but they typically have a reciever-dryer or an accumulator. In either case, it usually gets replaced when the system is opened up anyway, and needs to be replaced with a brand new part.

If you want to bring the bill down a bit, you might be able to source a decent 2nd hand condenser? You could always fit (or get a friend to fit) the condensor and r/d - so the only labour then is testing and refilling... :)

Its your lucky day!

I spent last weekend taking the aircon out of my car :)

So I have a air con radiator and the cylinder thing attached to it, all in good working order. I took it out because it was kind of getting in the way of the fmic and I never used it.

Make me an offer if you want it

Receiver drier is about £30 from Toyota

You will also need an expansion valve, approx £75

Last year I had an AC compressor fully refurbed to as-new, and the AC system totally replaced, tested etc. I also had a new water pump fitted at the same time. Total cost £900. I'd say £700 was the AC, including £300 for the AC pump.

£700 seems steep. Should be about £400 if your AC compressor is OK

My thoughts exactly!!

Well after looking at the car with a mate today i can see the 3 main parts:

The compresser(attached to engine)

The air con condenser(rad in front of water rad)

And the reciever dryer(round thing in front of the condenser)

I think thats right!!

Now the strange thing is the condenser was replaced 3 1/2 years ago and looks in very good condition, so seems strange that this would be leaking!

But again i dont belive they would tell me its knackered if it wasn't! this is a guy/garage that alot of members in the south use, and ive used for 3 years now with no probs at all! prices always seem very good!

Hmmm Confused now!!

So is there anyone in the essex area that's in the aircon trade that would fancy this job? im willing to pay to get it done propley just don't want to part with £700 just for a colder bit of air!!

This could be very handy, just would like to make sure mine REALLY needs replacing as is only 3 1/2 years old!!

How much would you want for it? there is one on ebay but hard to know if its any good or not,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GENUINE-MKIV-1993-Toyota-Supra-Air-Con-Radiator-N-R_W0QQitemZ260109723926QQihZ016QQcategoryZ10428QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And the prob with going 2nd hand with this type of part is you don't know if its good until all the hard work is done and the system refilled! Only to find out it also leaks and you end up spending more money on labour! and parts!!...

Someone please tell me they can do the whole job at a decent price:)

Cheers chris...

No worries mate, tbh its in the boot of my other car as I was going to throw it away. Just so you know, it worked fine in my car, no leaks etc and the air con was freezing cold! I believe its been on the car since it was made (1994) and the car has covered just short of 70k miles. I hardly used the aircon so that along with the fmic issue was the reason for taking it out.

As I said I was going to throw it away, I'll hang on to it until you decide if you want it or not. Don't worry you won't need to take a loan out to buy it, just a few quid + P&P :)

Let me know when you decide what to do

700 quid is robbery. Receiver is nothing to do with drier. Drier must be changed and unit just needs gas. Tops 200 quid. Loads of people know AC on here. Loads of people do it well at good price. Come on 700 quid?

I think its priced as follows

£280 condenser

£30 Receiver drier

£75 expansion valve

£100 for two re-gases (last time + one when fixed)

So thats around £500 just on parts then £200 labour @£35ph

= 5.75 hours! does that sound about right on labour??

I has a leak as its been refilled twice in the last year!

Cheers again....

Did they not inject a UV dye into the system, if there are any leaks it will clearly show up and you can see it clearly with a UV light!

To be honest the parts/labour breakdown seems about right, I did a MR2 the other day, and the condensor was alot of money, but at the end of the day, you could drive down the road and all you need is a stone hit it and it can puncture it, no matter how old!

But to be honest, I don't know why they filled your system up if it leaked, they should leak test every car. It should have failed and they should have filled it with oxygen and the dye and pressurised it to find the leak which is much much cheaper than the R134a gas..

Try Ebay for a condensor, but rightly the R/D is suppose to be replaced every 1-2 years regardless, to keep the system tip top..

Thats your best bet, just replace the seals and get a new R/D when fitting...

When the air con died the first time they put some dye into it checked it over but could not find a leak! so they said use it lots and come back once the temps start to rise! worked fine for 4/5 months then died again!

Now they've checked again and found the "leaks"

Just seems a bit pricy for cooler air

I can if your willing to travel to Birmingham.

Birmingham could be a good option,

Let me know what sort of price it would be;)

and if the parts are new/recon/used ect!

Thanks for all the help and info guys....

Hope i can get this sorted at a decent price, as im having to dip into the bpu fund for this repair:(
