colsoop Posted April 25, 2007 Share Posted April 25, 2007 Another tale of animal rescue I was going in to the garden to take some pictures and a little pigeon flaps past me but it is obviously not doing too well , the dog goes bolting after it luckily he stopped when i told him to (has to be a first) otherwise it would have been a tale of animal clean up So i grab a box and the poor little pigeon is petrified it starts flapping about and finds its way through the only gap in the fence on to the driveway on the otherside of the house I go round the front and try and manouveure it in to a box it goes in to a bush, i follow it in and coax it out, bloody twigs and all sorts scratching me, finally it is cornered and i grab it; wings are flapping everywhere, box lid shut and off to the vets we go. i hear a tapping noise and the little pigeon has anothe rbid for freedom i thought it was going to get out of the box while iu was driving . So it in now with the vet & they are going to look at it, hopefully it will be back out flying again soon probably dropping a well aimed crap on to my car after i have polished it Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She's got a flock of about 30 white doves in the back garden and quite regulary takes in the injured or poorly young ones for a bit of tlc. Especially after a hawk feeding raid. I called the vets and they said it's this time of the year where they are learning to fly, but can't quite do it yet.. hence end up randomly flapping around on the floor -keep an eye, and it will sort itself out. They said just try and give it a little home off the ground and keep it away from cats (bit of luck needed there I think!). We kept an eye on it (made a bit of a home behind the wheelie bins) and gave it milk and random scraps.. it stayed for a week and then we saw it having another crack at flying.. not long after he flew away.. Guest Milly Posted April 25, 2007 Share Posted April 25, 2007 thing is though with a pidgeon they see them as vermin and it will probably be put down. i saw these newborn hairless animals when i was younger, i thought they looked like puppies, three were already dead but the other two i took to the blue cross, i asked them what i could feed them on to hand rear them, they told me that they were baby weasels, vermin and so they would dispose of them, i was gutted, they were so cute, and id put them in my bra to keep warm Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I had to deal with thousands of the vermin when I was working under the M6 Spaghetti Junction, doing concrete repairs to the viaduct. I ended up walloping the bastards with a spirit level - if you let enough get near you and there's nests nearby, they'll gang up and attack. I allowed a brace of eggs to hatch into the white sky rats in the Guinea fowl coop last month, under pressure from Jane. Another of the damned things has now made a "nest" amd laid it's pair of eggs. In 18 days (from memory) from laying 2 of the ugliest critters will emerge, and be airborne in a furter 10 days to 2 weeks, ands sexually active before 6 months. Do you soft hearted lot want pics of the process? You can name them if you like. I'll promise not to shoot these, Janes pair are ringed, if they get shot i have to whip the rings off PDQ Although I *THINK* the sparrowhark has despatched one at first light this morning, there's a carcass and a mess of feathers near their normal play area. I'll have to have a look if it's ringed when i do the feed later. I fancied doves when we moved here, until I saw the mess they make on the roof, cars, the drive and every other surface. Thats why i boxed the little fella up and gave it to the vet to deal with. Pete Posted April 25, 2007 Share Posted April 25, 2007 I had one smack into the conservatory window once and land on a brick badly. Brought it in the house, fed it water (which leaked straight out of the huge hole in it's side). Hayley (my sister) was quite young at the time and adamant we save it so the RSPCA came out and took it away in the box. I'm sure they would've just snapped it's neck as soon as it got in the van.
