I'm running Server 2003. And am trying to find in the Group Policy editor where I can update the clients Hosts file and also add a URL to the trusted sites in Internet Explorer.

But I cant find them anywhere! grrrrr. Anyone got any ideas?

I don't know about the hosts file, but I would have thought it would make more sense to enter any records into DNS instead, unless it's just stuff you don't want applied to everyone, in which case just use the OU-specific logon script to copy over the hosts file, presuming the client has sufficient filesystem access to do that.

As far as the trusted sites via Group Policy, not something I've done but it looks like it'd be here:

Firstly, why are you using hosts? Surely DNS is a better way to implement host resolution?

You could always set a copy in the Startup/shutdown scripts section in GP to copy a host file of your choice, or wrap the host copy as an msi and snap it to the servers OU as a software installation? Just a few ideas off the top of my head.

The trusted sites setting needs to be imported, so first, completely configure the settings as you'd like them on your pc, then fire up Group Policy MMC and go to the setting in my screenshot, and click on the import section...

haha just done the sites bit before seeing your reply Carlos, cheers anyway.

and yup, am now gonna be using a OU specific batch file just to copy the Hosts file.

For some reason this software/website called Acturis that the company now wants to use needs to use Hosts instead of DNS! pain in the bum.

They are probably saying to edit the hosts file because they assume you're a bit thick and won't know about working on the DNS records, or that you don't run your own DNS. Basically, working on the hosts file covers all eventualities. But as you run your own DNS, and you're not thick, it makes sense to do it in DNS and have done with it.
