Got my bearing fixed and good tip.

(Meant to be supra-chat but never mind)

The noise I was getting at the rear was indeed a bearing gone. (Rotational noise, increasing with road speed). If you ever get it yourself, jack the car up, put a hand on the top and bottom of the wheel and move it in and out. The garage did this and there was noticable play with the wheel.

And as Paul Whiffin also correctly advised, I needed the bearing and flange too as the the flange was a bit chewed up. So if yours ever goes it might be a good idea to get the flange just in case.

Took the garage 4 hours to do which I thought was a bit too long but I got to drive it in anger again which suited me just fine :D

Out of interest, I have had a noise develop recently which sounds like a metal coathanger being tapped against the inside of the outer wing behind the driver. Does this sound as if it may be similar to the noise you experienced?

It only started yesterday and does not seem to do it when cornering or at low speeds (at least I could only hear it at 70+ in a straight line).

Any other advice greatfully received.

Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing mate

I think wheel bearings normally make a low grumbley whirly noise like when you drive over a rough road surface, typically getting louder as you turn and put weight on the side that has gone and sometimes go silent when you turn the other way and the weight is taken off them (especially noticeable if it's a front one)

I've got 1 to get done myself, this is not a particularly cheap fix then? with approx 4h * hourly rate labour + £50-100 bearing seal :( how much was the flange?

good advice btw, cheers :)

Cheers Chilli, I thought that too (hence the play in the wheel) mine doesn't seem too similar so I have posted a new question in technical.

Cheers

hmmm can't say yours definitely is a bearing but you've got play in the wheel or do you mean in the steering (wheel)?

if it's coming from the back, maybe it's drive shaft uj related, hard to say really

I found the opposite, it was louder with the weight "off" and a bit quiter with weight on it

hmmm well I guess it might depend exactly how the bearing has failed, main point being they tend to change in sound as you corner one way then the other.

Hmmmm...... I don't want to worry you but that sounds like there is a metal coathanger tapping the inside of your wing! :p
