locking wheel nut remover

On ~1996 BMW 3-series nuts, which are an odd sized spine-pattern, I did what Jamie suggested and hammered a 15mm spline socket onto them. Worked a treat, probably not great for the wheel bearings though.

 

I was also given a locking wheel nut remover, which is basically a reverse threaded, tapered socket. So it bites into the nut as you undo. If the wheel nuts have got a, errr. shoulder on them, then this sort of thing should work well, otherwise it'll just screw right over the nut and push against the wheel, which is no good.

This happened to me a few months back, it was on a verso, some bastard broke into the car, went into the glovebox (to try and find satnav) and stole the removal nut that was in there!

 

Ended up taking it to the local tyre place and they got them all off no problem, no damage to wheels or anything. I think they may have used an air chisel - so worth popping into somewhere local and asking. Only cost £20 inc new nuts :thumbs:

I think the problems start when there's no room around the outside of the nut in order to hammer a socket over. I had the same thing, there was literally only a mm or two between the nut and the wheel and this made it really hard to get anything over it.

 

Took it to Elite and they ruined so many socket bits trying to get them off but with the aid of a sledge hammer all 4 were eventually out. I invested in some smaller size nuts so as not to damage the wheels should this happen again.
