supraman382
Just wondering how an engine compression test is done nowadays. Was speaking to my dad the other day and when he used to work on cars (30 years or so ago) it was a case of removing the spark plug one at a time and placing a guage over the cavity and taking a reading (then again with the remaining plugs) Still the case or is it like everything else, just plug in a scart! Kranz
All plugs out, engine hot, throttle held wide open (pull fuel pump fuse to prevent an expolsion). The actual figure doesn't matter as much as the spread. Ideally they should all be within 5% of each other.
supraman382
OK so wouldnt cost much to have it checked at a garage before I decide to go BPU/Single. Thanks for that

Kranz
Yep, DIY. Guage £15.... easy job (just watch out for the coil pack connectors if they're a bit old). Also you may want a leak down test done while you're in there. This gives a better indication of the condition of the rings as it uses compressed air to check the sealing of the rings against the bore. This is something for a garage to do though. cheekymonkey
Yep, DIY. Guage £15.... easy job (just watch out for the coil pack connectors if they're a bit old). Is the cheapy gauge from Halfords good enough?
Kranz
Is the cheapy gauge from Halfords good enough? Any guage is ok as its not the actual numbers (accuracy) thats important, but what each cylinder is compared to the others. As long as it works and has a scale that can read 5 or 10psi increments then its going to be fine. Draper do one for £18 and Screwfix for £16.
