part_timer
I had my brakes replaced last year and they have just started squeaking. not too much just every now and then. I had them apart myself prior to them being replaced and there were two metal plates on top of the pads, looked them up and they are anti-rattle shims. The machanic hasnt replaced these along with the pads so i was wondering if that was what is causing the squeaking?
baz
yep, that will clause squeaking and knocking. best strip them down and replace the shims mate

Supe
It's very common for the mechanic not bothering replacing these. If there missing then the breaks might squeal, although usually there ok without them
Pete
CW left mine out as he says he founds on his Supra it helped give a more positive feel to the pedal. They sometimes squeel a little but it doesn't bother me. I kept them just in case though.

They are anti-squeel shims btw, not anti-rattle. The anti-rattle things are the springs that go on the back round the pins.
