Slipping Ancillary Belt?

Class One

Recommended Posts

Got a call from wifey last night whilst I was at work saying that my car had developed a noise.

Great. Just what I need the day before Supra Pod.:(

Got home this morning and fired her up. Started ok with no noise or issues, but after about 3mins of cold idle and as the car started to settle down and reduce the load on the engine it started to squeal on tickover which to me sounds like the ancillary belt slipping.

Now the belt was replaced about 5k miles ago when the cambelt was done. Had a look at it and its a Gates belt.

Everything else is as it should be.

So, can the belt be adjusted and tightened, or does it need replacing?

Doesn't look like I'll be running and if I can't get it resolved today, then it's unlikely I'll be going as I don't fancy a 120mile return trip with a dodgy ancillary belt. :(

Put a blob of tippex on your crank pully, one on each bit (inner/outer) start the car and do what ever it takes to make it squeek. For me this was turn on the AC full wack and quickly turn the wheel side to side. Stop engine, and see if your marks still line up - if they dont, crank pullys dieing - same as mine

My crank pully is a really nasty screech though, pretty unbearable, how loud is your squeek?

Right just went out for a short drive around the block, nothing hasty 25-30mph no boost or anything.

I marked the outside of the crank pulley dampner with paint and the two blobs are still in the same place relative to each other. But the squealing is still there under idle but not present went the engine is under load.

So the question is should I risk it, goto pod, where I'll be able to change the ancillary belt? Or would it be more prudent not to go.

Jake can you pm me a price for the dampner, may as well replace it, when it gets serviced in 2 weeks time.

Doug, sounds like a slightly loose belt. Do you know what the part number & size is?

I fitted one about 10mm shorter as the tensioner looked to be going a bit slack, and the shorter belt was MUCH cheaper than a belt from Mr T... and HUGELY cheaper than a Mr T belt & tensioner.

You may be better off doing this as it will put more tension into the belt.

The reason it doesn't squeal in the first few mins is that the alternator is quite highly loaded for the first few mins after strt as it recharges the battery. This puts a lot of tension on the belt. Once it drops the load then the belt will go a bit slacker, letting it squeal. Once it gets hot it should stop squealing.

You can get some belt dressing spray that makes it grip better.... or use some tyre grip product up at the Pod ;)

Edit - Std is 6PK1940. A 6PK1930 from an Aristo would pull it up a bit tighter. You should be able to pick these up almost anywhere at about £8.

if you raise the revs slightly, (in neutral), does the noise go away ?

Yes

check that the belt is within the safe markings, if it is I wouldnt worry and just get it changed fine at pod.

Is the belt within the 2 markings on the aux tensioner arm?

You'll have to show me a pic to show me what you mean.

Going to take her out for a slightly longer run now for fuel so I'll see how it is.

Right I've just had to walk 3 miles to my sister in laws where I am now. Took the car out and after a couple of miles she was squealing like a bugger. Pulled over and had a look and the ancilliary belt has come off the crank pulley dampner at the bottom. Went to use my mobile and it died.

Going to go back and see if we can put the belt back on just to get it home (about 2 miles) but I would almost catagorically say that I won't be there tomorrow at all now. :(

Bit of a bugger eh?!! :(

Has the belt just come off or has the pulley fallen apart???

Been thinking about this. I wonder if there's a way to stop the outer ring actually falling off when it does fail? At least it'd be a get you home measure.

Right back home now. The dampner has failed, the font part has sperated from the back, but at least it didn't come off.

To get the car home, I took the auxilliary belt off altogether as it was only a short drive home on open roads so there were no issues with overheating etc. So at least the car is home.

The bad news is I won't be coming now tomorrow. :(

My sister in laws husband reckons he get put the new one on but as we'll need a new belt and dampner this won't be happening until next week.
