Supragal
I'm thinking about getting another bike but I've been well out of the scene for a long time now so I've lost track of whats good and what's not. I know what I'm after pretty much. Any recommendations on where to buy etc?

Ian W
if i had the cash i'd go for an Orange, however i don't so ended up with a Claud Butler that's gonna be done if i do any serious stuff (not likely since the girlfriend applies the brakes at the slightest downhill). as of where to buy from, not sure i can help on that as i just went along to my local place in inverness. Supragal
By the sounds of it it's all the same names so far. I had a few cannondales, a GT, Klein, Orange, Identiti.
Guest Phillw454
I used to use a kona, cant remeber the name right now but was their full sus downhill bike, never let me down but i again have been out of it for 2 years. Orange are good but pricey for their high spec bikes. Santacruz? Only £3000+

I used to have a Cannondale M1000 a fair few years ago, kitted it out quite well, then it got nicked, and I discovered beer and fags and kebabs... heckler
I now have a single speed marin alpine trail - yup, a single speed full susspension bike! - But like everyting else, all depends on how much you want to spend...
Supragal
I always liked Konas but preferred the ridiculour oversized tubing of the Cannondales I had a Killer V 900, maguras, ringle everything (do they still exist?) middleburn, loads of cool bits. Supragal
I'm not after full sus at all. I'm thinking rigid, maybe front sus. Pot- that's the problem!
cashpoint
Bit off topic but front brake on my bike is leaking so need to top it up (and find the leak at some point too) . As I've got couple of bottles of brake fluid for a car can i use this on a bike?

Be VERY careful which fluid you use - make sure it is of the same type (probably DOT 4.1 or 5.1 - I haven't been on my bike for three years ). It'll probably have some note or inscription on the reservoir recommending which fluid to use.
Supragal
dot 5, presuming you're talking about disc brakes?
neil tt
What about the one thats was up for sale on here, not sure if its still for sale though:)
Lukeyboy2k
Supragal said: dot 5, presuming you're talking about disc brakes? Correct - from memory most disc brakes for mountain bikes use dot4 or dot5.1 (preferably 5.1 due to boiling temps etc). not to be confused with dot5 (which has a different make-up, but I won't go into a chemistry lecture now). cashpoint
Supragal said: dot 5, presuming you're talking about disc brakes? Yes talking about hydraulic discs. As for the original question as to what bike. Mine was brought new off fleabay and has stood up to as much punishment (more in fact as i came off alot in at the start of thorwing it down hills) as bikes worth 5 times the price. Even now i don't see why you'd spend over £500 when a well bought £200 bike does everything thats needed. An expensive bike doesn't make a good rider, while a good rider will make a cheap bike look good.
colsoop
Good thread i have tbeen thinking about getting back in to it after 5 years away. i was browsing through a mountain bike mag the other day and god things have changed technology has really come on leaps and bounds. I have a racing bike for fitness and i get bored doing mile after mile of straight road so could do with a mountain bike as well.. Nothing beats that rush of darting through single track roads skimming between trees and logs. Are Gt still up there as one of the best ?
Supragal
God no, Halfrauds bought them out IIRC so they are now, as you can imagine, poopy pants.

Supragal
I had a Zaskar and it was cool not anymore apparently just been looking on ebay. Dunno where to start!
steve spedd
best bet is to set yourself a budget then see what the reviews throw up... im looking at an Orange Crush and a marin both around £1000 and cant decide! both are hard tails...

They had the interesting frame geometry (like many GTs). In the end I went for an old (1998) stumpjumper (specialized) off ebay. Then I proceeded to get new wheels, brakes, seat post, entire drive train so it almost cost as much as a new one. But, it looked (and still does) IMHO awesome..................hmmm must go riding. Supragal
ooOOooo they do womens frames, as in tough but cool ones. I like the Specializes stumpjumper comp women and the cannondale caffeine feminine. £1500 and £1000 respectively though.
Scooter
go retro and get one of the bikes you remember If you are not after full suspension then nothing much has changed over the years............ A classic Klein or Kona (explosive etc) hardtail would be a good choice...........always fancied an Endorphin myself but they are scarce these days............
