TrevS
Hi guys I recently sold my Supra and was genuinely gutted when I saw it drive around the corner and off in to the distance never to be seen again. I sold the car to move to London in the thought that I would not need a car down here. But after a couple of months down here I am starting to think about buying a new car. The criteria for my next purchase is simple. I am looking for a car with supercar performance for under £25k. Initially I wanted something big and fast with lots of road presence like the Supra but theres not a lot of cars that offer such great performance matched with great looks and bullet proof reliability. At the moment the current choice is a Lotus S2 Exige. Its got mini GT looks with Supercar beating track ability. Other cars I have been looking at are: TVR T350 - Its a more refined Trevor, but like all TVR's still likes to eat engines TVR Tuscan - Wild looks and performance, Wild service bills and build quality Jag XKR (old shape) - Great performance and looks great on the outside, looks like a pensioner on the inside Lotus Esprit V8 - Always wanted one as a kid, looks a bit dated now though Maserati 3200GT - Nice looking car with great engine, aparently there not too good to drive though I think thats all of the ones I have looked at, so what do you guys reckon would be a worthy replacement for a Supra? michael
Your own list doesn't seem to take into account your desire for "bullet proof reliability" At that budget (and discounting exotic tuned Japanese stuff) I'd probably opt for a Porsche 911 (996) - not quite supercar performance but plenty of fun to be had. An example of one local to me: http://www.strasse.co.uk/cars.asp?car_id=
SMiFFAD
Out of your list i think the Exige Always liked the slightly off the wall look of them, even though in a straight line i dont think they are that fast (believe they start running out of puff near 100?) they do corner like nothing on earth TVR's are good drive way orniments, but as a dealer once said to a mate of mine, if you dont have what the car cost put away for servicing etc, dont bother! (brutally honest!) The other ones are a bit bland compared to the Exige... end of the day though its up to you what you like NSX? quite rare, good presence on the road, good on track. Tom
Is this for every day driving or just weekend?
TrevS
Yep your right maybe the bullet proof reliability should be a desirable factor but not an essential then. Although I have heard nothing but good things about the Exige's reliability and servicing costs are supposed to be pretty good. With excellent fuel economy too I think its a real contender. TrevS
Well living in London means realistically its a weekend car but I would like to think that the car could be used on a Daily basis if needed. Which probably rules out the TVR's
TrevS
Other cars I have considered are: BMW M3 - Great drivers car, massive power, reliable, can be used everyday. But looks a bit to boring and is a BMW. You know what people think of BMW drivers. Plus new replacement out soon which won't help depreciation Noble M12 - Would be at the very top end of the budget and am not sure I am keen on the looks. Plus is probably even more hardcore track focused than an exige and again would rule this out as a daily runner
michael
I stand by my opinion on the 996, so much so that I might go and look at the one I linked to for myself, time to grow up perhaps....
DaveK
I stand by my opinion on the 996, so much so that I might go and look at the one I linked to for myself, time to grow up perhaps.... I agree - although I think 996s are ugly, and if I was buying a 911 as my only car I'd rather have a 993 (or of course a 964). However - I'm still debating whether to keep my Supra long term, and I've decided that I don't want something as focussed as the 964 / 993 as a daily car. I'm wondering if a 996 might be the logical choice for me.

You know what people think of BMW drivers. Plus new replacement out soon which won't help depreciation I've just got back from a w/e in London with the family and it seemed that every other car driving down the road was either a taxi or a BMW M3! Something like the Exige would be a lot more exclusive (if thats important to you).
JamesRZ
as i have one i would go for the XKR awesome mid range power and has excellent road grip not as expensive to run as you would think i get 21mpg on the computers average! Unfortunatly reliability isnt as good as it should be ive had loads of little bits go!
grahamc
as a daily car, I would say the porsche... the exige, i really doubt would be any good as a daily drive... rock hard suspension, track tuned, a b*tch to get in and out of (do you wear a suit for work?). How tall are you?
silvershark44
I recently visited london, and i couldnt beleive the number of 911's and boxters I saw! Very common car down that way.

grahamc
I like the NSX idea... wouldnt mind one of those... If you are a subaru fan you can go for a 22B for that price.
Daston
I would either go for a 911 (964) turbo or how about an older TVR like the Griff 500 still silly performance but with the rather reliable 5lt Rover V8 plus the service costs are not a lot different than the supra. dangerous brain
Erm why not get another supra??? Ticked the box's previously and that sort of cash will buy you a stupendously fast one.

You will not get a decent 964 turbo for £25K. You'd be lucky to even find a LHD 3.3 one for that.
Daston
really?? there were some on piston heads for that sort of money however I am not that clued up on them I am toying on getting on in a few years if I get board of the supra or as another car. Key word is decent. A good 964 turbo will be mid to high 30s - although that would be a 3.6 one and there are not so many about (but if I was buying one, it's the only one I'd have). I certainly wouldn't expect RHD 3.3s at that price - you might get LHDs for that kind of money, but I would expect to pay more for something without problems. Edit : A very good 964 NA will still set you back around £17-18K - but you could buy a bad LHD one for £10K.
tbourner
I'd love an Exige, I think they look so cool! After owning a Supra I said I'd fancy something opposite - light and nimble with no top end!!
