merckx
I want to replace the lubricant in the 6 speed gearbox. After doing a search I found the one to use is V160, is this Dexron V160? But on the MKIV.NET site it recommends ESSO Dexron D21065. If I ask for some V160 at the Toyota dealer will he recognize this and get the right stuff? The oil was changed a couple of years ago but the previous owner was only charged £15 for 3 litres, this cannot be the correct spec as I've heard the V160 is about £25 per litre. Is this the correct part number for V160 "08885-01306" Thanks
merckx
I'll just answer my own question. Just been to Toyota Dealer. The part number for V160 gearbox oil is "08885-01306" It is about £26 + VAT per litre. Hope it takes just less than 2 litres:)
Paul -C-
Is there a guide somewhere on how to change the oil?
Zed
there will be instuction in the service book which can be viewed on mkiv.com It's very easy, just undo the drain nut under the gearbox to drian out whatever is already in there and replace the nut. Then undo the fill nut and fill it up till it reaches level with the fill hole. (assuming the car is level during the whole process). Job done. merckx
I did a search yesterday and someone who I can't remember gave a good tip. Make sure you can remove the filler plug on the side of the gearbox first before you drain the oil. At least you'll know you can get the oil back in! Paul -C-
Would changing the oil on a ten year old car make the gearbox smoother?
Zed
Possibly, if the old oil is in a really bad state, however, you'll just have to accept the the getrag 6sp box is quite clunky by nature so don't expect too much from an oil change>
merckx
I'll be changing mine at the weekend and will post on here afterwards. If the oil hasn't been changed on a 10 year old car then I would want to change it anyway.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Can't do any harm. When is the gearbox oil due to be changed in a service? 60k?
250horses
I discovered Redline MTL from the USA in my MR2 Turbo days. Its expensive but worth every penny. Gear changes become smoother, slick and unnotchy. http://www.redlineoil.co.uk/

There have been problems in the US with people using Redline oil, it can cause a bushing inside the gearbox to expand, causing selection problems. Here is a link from MKIV.com which is a response from Getrag about this.
