Max Headroom
WHEN London won its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games, the ancient art of bell ringing was not one of the 'sports' which immediately sprang to mind. But wannabe bell ringers are already being sought in Essex to train up in time to ring church bells across the county to celebrate the start of the games. Libby Laurence, of the Essex Association of Change Bell Ringers (EACR), said it was seeking old and young people to train in the methods which were first put on record in the 16th Century. This week in Coggeshall one of only three national, annual bell ringing courses will be held for which 72 people have already signed up. The course has been run at Honywood School for 17 years and attracts people from across the country and abroad. It will concentrate mostly on perfecting techniques in time for the Queen's diamond wedding anniversary later this year, although it will also look ahead to the Olympics. There are 167 useable bell towers in Essex and an average of between six and 10 people are needed to ring the bells in each one. Mrs Laurence said more recruits were needed to ensure the county was ready for the Olympic Games. “We must make sure we have enough ringers for every bell tower in the county to be rung at the same time,” she said. “It is five years away but we started planning in January.” She added: “If you want to take part in the Olympics, but don't want to run a race, you could be part of a band of bell ringers here in Essex.” Bell ringing was originally used for celebrations or for warnings and the bell tower was separate to the church building. Traditionally bell ringers were paid in beer before the church took over the responsibility for the towers. Not quite an Olympic sport
