What's the deal with my stupid iPod?

Mike

Recommended Posts

I have a 60Gb iPod... which is actually more like 55.75Gb

I have more than 55.75Gb of music on my PC - so I've changed to setting from 'sync everything' to 'only sync checked items' - and unchecked lots of random stuff I never listen to.

When I plug the iPod in it seems to think about it for about half an hour, completely wipes the iPod, and then complain that it can't sync because the playlists don't exist? when the playlist do exist - and I haven't unchecked any of the tracks in any of the playlists...

Eventually I said, 'just sync playlists' which is was happy to do... but now I don't have any music outside those playlists...?!

The support on their site is not that good really... and can't seem to find anything useful on the web - can anyone help? has anyone had this problem?

i'd do yourself a favour mike and just sync manually.

It's time consuming but at least you'll know it's on there and not just letting it do what it wants.

:)

That could take me a week! I'll check it out though...

I wish the stupid app would just do what it says.. I can't believe something this widely used can be this buggy?!

its 55gb cos of the FAT.

if you want to do it manually i had the same problem. with it wiping all the time. there was another tick box in a totally random place that I had to untick to make it work properly. if you dont sort it i'll have a look when i get home.

erm... so I plugged in my iPod last night and it all worked... updated all the tracks I ticked, and all the Playlists.. no problems what-so-ever...

So.. the solution is reboot the PC, wait a few days, don't change anything in iTunes... and it should work fine :)

It just needs a few days to come to terms the fact that you don't want ABBA or Blue on your iPod anymore...

There's nothing wrong with Abba!

Blue on the other hand should never have been on your ipod unless you are actually a girl. :p

an experienced PC user i take it?

Ha. Don't worry - I certainly don't think non-standard PC hardware is the best solution to the world's technology problems. Unfortunately, the Apple model also stems competition, which is part of what is holding them back.

That's why there's so many better portable music players than the iPod (and it's why the software market supports Windows better than Mac OS). For portable music, Apple got the technology just about okay, but they got the marketing and the timing spot on. The problem is that there now just trying to squeeze money out of a cash cow rather than actually pushing the technology forwards.

so what can a windows based mp3 do that an 80gb ipod video can't?

I wasn't speaking about Windows-based anything. I certainly wouldn't recommend any windows-based mobile devices. Even MS-Mobile is ridiculously heavyweight.

...but my point is that non-proprietary things can be produced in a competitive market that drives quality up and therefore reduces problems like those that Mike is having........

The Windows O/S is an evil bugbear that we have to endure because it provides this sort of competitive market for desktop applications.

I kinda see what you're saying, although I still think that ipod is the best portable audio device on the market.

I've yet to find one that is as easy to use (my gf has had both iRiver and Creative).

Yes the ipod and itunes have problems but nothing compared to those that you have to use with Windows Media Player or those that require the use of their own software (i.e. Sony).

Agreed. The flipside of a competitive market is, of course, that there's a lot of cheap cr*p that gets produced too, with low enough prices to lure the unwary buyer. It's usually these types of devices that are tied to Windows Media Player.

(a friend of mine recently bought a Goodmans 40Gb mobile video device 'cos it was £80. Heap of junk. Not worth half that price!)

And don't get me started on Sony! Their copy protection thing was an abomination!!!!! :D
