I'm a girl, let me go....

When the navy boys and girls were held captive in Iran, one of the stories in the news was whether they were going to release the girl or not.

Why should they? In a world where women demand equal rights (and I agree with this) why should they be treated any differently?

Am I being unreasonable?

They like everyone in the armed forces signed on the dotted line, fair enough they have admitted they do not get special "hostage" training as such, but they knew the risks involved by being in a job that they knew could be sent to an area that could be hostile territory.

Does equal opportunities only apply to non armed forces people?

I think to be honest that was media hype. Since she's been on TV and told her story I don't think she was all 'I'm the only girl let me go'.

However, the fact that she was in Iran and they don't exactly have equal rights for men and women like we do, she was probably more vulnerable than them.

It doesn't make her have more of a right though blah blah blah.

I getting f#cked off seeing that woman on the front page of every paper or hearing about her on the news, I bet the rest of the Navy are too. You watch, she will waltz around like a celeb, get shit from other members of the navy, become unhappy, then sue the arse off the MOD for being unhappy

argh, i can't stand her, what did she do to encourage people to want to interview her anyway, she got captured (sarcasm). Anyone notice how when she was captured she had such a hard time of it, could even smoke a cigarette.

Is is still name, rank, serial in the forces when captured, and not 'i will write this letter' as i am so hard done by, and want to see my daughter. If she was that worried maybe she should not have joined up in the first place and stayed at home.

Considering other members of the forces who are in the true front line each and every day, she did nothing. There are both men and women living in the constant danger of getting blown up each day and they put up with lot more.

ok, maybe i would have more sympathy if she had stood there armed firing to the last shot at the Iranian forces and then started hitting them after that. but they didn't fire a shot. I am sure this will go down well with ex-service people or even current ones who would stand there until the last round is spent.

There reasoning was crap, imo. the excuse they outnumbered us and we had no chance of winning, well, maybe if they had tried the Iranians may have backed off.

maybe someone in the Navy can explain when they said HMS Cornwall could not go further into the waters due to the depth, and so our forces got captured, they could not send a shot from the 4.5inch across the Iranian's. Are our ROE that crap.

final point, really puts into context the only serving soldier to win the VC when you compare his press coverage to hers.

oh well, rant over for the morning,

I agree - she is very irritating. What annoyed me was when the whole "should they get paid for their stories" thing was kicking off and she said "I don't think there's anything wrong with that because I want to put my side of the story across". Yeah - but at least one of the others managed that, but didn't take all the cash.

She was also adamant that "a percentage" of the money was going to the boat - bet it wasn't a very big percentage.

I give it 6 months before she's taking her top off to pose on the cover of FHM or something just to stay in the public eye.

oh yeah, another thing, did you hear one of the sailor's that was captured. He said when they were released they were given the 'goodie-bag' and it was useless stuff. He then went on to say that it did not cover the cost of the iPod the Iranians stole off him.

Is it just me that thinks it is strange someone on an active operation and boarding boats can carry an iPod with them. how can he get time to listen to music, when his first priority is being a sailor, as that's what he is paid for.

rant 2 over with

true, why did they need to want to get paid, if they are 'honourable' people, they should tell it for free. Or, at least, donate it to the four who got killed the other day, or the sergeants family who got killed due to lack of body armour, or the one's killed by the US in friendly fire.

'a percentage' of her money, wow, wonder how much.

the FHM issue would be a scary thought, would need a NBC suit i think :)

No point denying it. A female POW or hostage is in a VERY different position to her male counter-part when under integration or torture and therefore I honestly think no females should be put in a situation in which capture is possible ie. front line in a war zone.

Thats not being 'sexest'. Its just a sad fact.

Female soilders are perfectly capable and I have no doubt are more than equal in the mental and physical aspects of the armed forces, but the threat of interrogation, questioning and abuse must be seriously considered.
