Network captive portals..

Anybody got any experience with regards portals...

Currently at home, I run an IPCop firewall on a mini-itx system. It runs my proxy/cache, anti-spam, filtering (non kiddy friendly stuff), firewall, layer 7 filter to prevent p2p stuff such as torrents, emule and limewire.

Currently provide internet to both neighbours which works very well through my wired and wireless system (4 Access points)..

However, due to the problems with kids being kids, my kids have decided to argue over usage of the PC's. So I'm looking for a more automatic way of letting them have 3 hours a day, and once their time is up it prevents them getting onto the net. Internal network access I don't mind since all the media is stored on the NAS system anyway.

Been looking at things like ChilliSoft, but none seem to integrate cleanly into IPcop.. more than happy to change from ipcop provided I still get my above features.

Anyone have any ideas..

So you want a proxy with user profiles and usage quotas? How much money do you have to spend? :D

Yeah, I know.... I've designed these systems for work before and they are anything but cheap, however my home system is completely built on open-source and free software (I hate paying for software)...

Not really user profiles / quota's as such, just want to be able to say let them have an hour on, and then an hour break sort of thing... looks like it is going to have to be a Radius server of some kind..

  • 1 year later...

Didn't bother in the end, and decided not to make my internet access at home public access in the end. Too much effort...

Doesnt SQUID have this stuff built in, been a while since I looked at it.

I believe the smoothwall instance with dansgaurdian I've got will be able to do it, but I just couldn't be bothered :)

what about creating windows accounts for them and only allow them to log onto the domain at certain times for certain duration......(assuming that you are running windows)

cant log into the machine, cant go online.

for the local network stuff, perhaps they use a guest account that doesnt give them internet access.
