oil light?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I went on along with a mate of mine for a look at a twin turbo supra he wants to buy on the weekend, to offer impartial advice, and drool a bit. was a lovely car, body work in good nick, seemed to be good car all round.

The seller took us out for a test drive, very exciting:) (being an N/A owner was extra exciting for me :) )

Now the question, when we got back, he pulled up and the oil warning light came on, im no expert, but this cant be a good thing right?

cheers for any help

mm, that sucks, was looking really good up untill that point. it also worried me a bit when i asked why it had come on he said "guess i burnt a bit of oil just then", thats a lot of oil to burn in a 10 minute drive!

i could be wrong but sounds like the oil level light not oil pressure, either the engine is low on oil, or the sensor has been knocked, I had this prob after some work was done, and same thing happened after I overhauled my starter motor, just needs the sensor taking out and putting back in gently.

if it wasn't burning oil, i.e. no blue smoke / nasty smell and the level light came on it's probably not a big deal. Probably the level was a bit borderline low (which is not great, but it's not nasty news) or as others have said, the sensor it wonky.

You should have a look on the dipstick / in the oil filler hole and at the cap to see the general sign/level of the oil to see if it's been well serviced. I'd rather have a slightly low level of fresh new oil than lots of black thin worn out oil...

and after a drive some of the oil is still around the engine, and if you're on a slope the level can read wrong too. So always take these things into consideration.

I would immediatly walk away from any car that the owner can't be bothered to check the oil level on prior to selling. What does that say for the rest of its maintainance history.

I tend to agree. Smacks of lack of maintenance, although it's not gauranteed to be a dog just because the oil's low.
