Mike M
Why does my car get quieter when I press the clutch in neutral? I originally thought the release bearing but that would make a noise when pressing the clutch. It's not a concerning noise just a whirring that goes when the clutch pedal is in. Cheers:) Mike
ry4n
I wouldn't mind knowing either, mine does exactley the same thing
Mike M
Well i'm hoping its just down to with the clutch up your turning over the gearbox causing extra drag with more noise and nothing more serious.
keron
that would be the release bearing wouldn't it? noise goes away when you put the clutch pedal down?
Mike M
I thought the release bearing only comes into play when your foot is on the clutch as it comes into contact with the clutch fingers to lift the friction plate off the flywheel. steb9780
I have had all the bearing, clutch and flywheel changed. It still makes a noise, but it's not as bad as before it was all done.
Nic
Stock clutch and flywheel? If it has a lightened flywheel these can rattle at tickover, the rattling will go when the clutch is depressed.

They're stock mate, it's not a rattle its kind of a quiet whirring sound. I don't really know how better to describe it.

Ahh maybe thats it, the stock flywheel is original and done over 70k getting a bit knackered probably.
Graham S
It does sound like the release bearing dude, It can happen to a new one sometimes if the input shaft isn't greased before refitting..
Chris Wilson
If the clutch is up the gearbox internals are all turning. if it's depressed the gearbox internals are not turning, assuming the car is stationary in neutral. So the noise is gearbox gear and bearing noise.
Mike M
Thanks Chris. Can you tell me when you would hear a dodgy release bearing? I'm pretty sure it's when the clutch pedal is depressed as I think that's when the release bearing starts spinning up to engine speed. Chris Wilson
Normally yes, you are correct, but the pull type clutch on the Supra has the bearing turning, but relatively unloaded, all the time.
Mike M
Cheers Chris, thats good to know. I've done one clutch before and bearing but I don't think i'd tackle the sups. Mike
